There's a new diving sensation that's taken Italy—and honestly, much further—by storm. Matteo Santoro, just 18, wowed everyone by becoming a new champion at this year's World Aquatics Championships held in Singapore. But that's not all that's got people talking. Santoro recently opened up about his relationship with his fellow diver and boyfriend, Max Linan, capturing hearts both in and out on deck.
Santoro, teaming up with Chiara Pellacani on a mixed 3-meter springboard, delivered an awe-inspiring performance on Wednesday that nabbed Italy's first-ever gold in a synchronized diving event at these championships. Competing against top names like Australia's Cassiel Rousseau and Maddison Keeney, who took silver, and China's Cheng Zhilong and Li Yajie, who snagged bronze, this dynamic duo's skill and chemistry were undeniable. Their impressive partnership has already brought them a total haul that's eight medals strong from various prestigious competitions.
Earlier this month, Matteo's heartwarming relationship with Max Linan, who's 19, became public. Max celebrated their one-year anniversary with a touching Instagram post, affirming that both he and Matteo are proudly open about who they are. Linan, competing under Spain's banner, showed off his own diving chops at Worlds, placing 23rd in 1-meter and taking 14th in men's 3-meter synchro with Juan Cortes. As both are set on competing in more events, we're all in store some thrilling performances.
Following his stellar Singapore victory, Santoro didn't hold back his enthusiasm. "I'm just so happy," he said, brimming with excitement. "Being with Chiara keeps me grounded. I do some breathing exercises, you know, just distract myself a bit. Tomorrow's another big day with 3-meter individual. Right now, it's party time, but I'll soon need a mental reset."
The future looks bright as Santoro gears up and heads over stateside soon—he's set on joining Miami University's Hurricanes swim and dive team. Pellacani, who's been there, can't wait. "We know each other so well," she said. "It's been a big help. I'm excited about Matteo coming over so we can train even more together."
Originally a young talent from Rome, Santoro's been making waves since his senior World Championships debut last year in Budapest, where he clinched silver with Pellacani. He's got a promising road ahead, and we're all eager watch his journey unfold.
Santoro joins an esteemed group diving greats who are also proudly part LGBTQ+ community. This prestigious list includes Greg Louganis from USA, Great Britain's Tom Daley, and Australia's Mathew Helm. Santoro's openness about his relationship with Linan sends a powerful message about authenticity and love, both in sports and in life.
