Recently, there has been a noticeable drop in openly gay professional male soccer players, going from five down only two. This reflects ongoing challenges LGBTQ+ athletes face in men's soccer.
Jakub Jankto's time with Italian Serie A club Cagliari wrapped up just as Pride Month ended. The Czech winger now joins English forward Jake Daniels and Australian left-back Josh Cavallo in exploring free agency. Daniels parted ways with Blackpool in early May, and Cavallo left Adelaide United shortly after.
These athletes have made significant strides by coming out publicly, underscoring how few LGBTQ+ players are visible in men's soccer.
Back in October 2021, Josh Cavallo became a focal point as he emerged as one and only openly gay player in a top-tier league. Jake Daniels made his mark by coming out at just 17, which made him Britain's first openly gay professional men soccer player since Justin Fashanu over 30 years ago.
In February 2023, while on loan with Sparta Prague, Jakub Jankto bravely shared a coming-out video on social media, marking him as first active international player declaring his sexuality publicly. Despite having 45 caps with Czech Republic, Jankto faced some challenges post coming out, not having represented his national team since 2022.
After wrapping up his loan with Sparta, Jankto was released by Getafe and joined Cagliari. Under coach Claudio Ranieri, Jankto made a difference with 20 appearances in 2023/24 season, even scoring a key goal that kept Cagliari in Serie A. After Ranieri left, Jankto found himself on bench 29 times and never played under new coach.
Jankto battled injuries and inconsistency on field, but it seems financial terms also influenced his playtime. Rumor had it that Cagliari would face extra expenses if Jankto played, due contractual clauses around foreign players.
Despite all this, Jankto stands firm in his decision and doesn't regret coming out. He's often expressed gratitude towards teammates and Cagliari supporters who helped secure their Serie A spot another season.
Jankto bid farewell on Instagram, thanking fans and sharing his affection towards Cagliari as he moves on.
Off field, Jankto reportedly dates Vojtech Stulik, with whom he shared a popular social media post. He once aimed on growing his esports company—it has since folded—but he considers moving stateside. However, his young son living in Prague with his mother significantly impacts his choice staying in Europe.
Jake Daniels and Josh Cavallo are enjoying their offseason while they explore new opportunities. Meanwhile, Colling Martin and Andy Brennan, still actively playing as openly gay male soccer players, continue their careers in lower leagues.
Colling Martin plays with North Carolina FC in USL Championship, while Andy Brennan represents South Melbourne in NPL Victoria division and also works as psychologist with Melbourne City.
A FIFA report estimates over 128,000 active professional male players worldwide, yet only Martin and Brennan are known as openly gay. This paints a clear picture about lack LGBTQ+ representation in sport.
FIFA and UEFA have backed Pride Month in past but did little this year, raising questions about their dedication LGBTQ+ inclusion. For players like Jankto, finding a team offering supportive environment remains vital as their careers progress.
In men's professional soccer, few clubs actively support LGBTQ+ athletes. Acknowledgment during Pride Month marks a valuable step in reinforcing inclusive values in sport. For Jankto, Daniels, Cavallo, and others, journey proceeds through a challenging but hopeful path towards diversity embrace.

This election aims to fill the vacancy left by Delegate E [...]
