Third Openly Gay Male Soccer Player Exits Team This Summer

Recently, there has been a noticeable drop in openly gay professional male soccer players, going from five down only two. This reflects ongoing challenges LGBTQ+ athletes face in men's soccer.

Jakub Jankto's time with Italian Serie A club Cagliari wrapped up just as Pride Month ended. The Czech winger now joins English forward Jake Daniels and Australian left-back Josh Cavallo in exploring free agency. Daniels parted ways with Blackpool in early May, and Cavallo left Adelaide United shortly after.

These athletes have made significant strides by coming out publicly, underscoring how few LGBTQ+ players are visible in men's soccer.

In February 2023, while on loan with Sparta Prague, Jakub Jankto bravely shared a coming-out video on social media, marking him as first active international player declaring his sexuality publicly. Despite having 45 caps with Czech Republic, Jankto faced some challenges post coming out, not having represented his national team since 2022.

After wrapping up his loan with Sparta, Jankto was released by Getafe and joined Cagliari. Under coach Claudio Ranieri, Jankto made a difference with 20 appearances in 2023/24 season, even scoring a key goal that kept Cagliari in Serie A. After Ranieri left, Jankto found himself on bench 29 times and never played under new coach.
