Rutger published: Looking Beyond the Trump Era: Challenges and Opportunities for the Future

As Donald Trump's time in office comes closer and closer toward its end, whether through elections or just how politics naturally changes, it's important we think about life after such a divisive chapter in American politics.

Trump can't stay president forever, no matter his ambitions. His unpopularity with many suggests political winds may change soon, possibly even by our upcoming elections. A lot are hoping these elections will bring fresh Democratic leadership in Congress. Even if Trump decides he wants another go, things like term limits and changing voter demographics might not be in his favor.

Where politics goes from here

If history has taught us anything, it's that political power will always shift. What's really on everyone else's mind, though, isn't if, but how our future leaders will tackle Trump's legacy and what they'll do differently, hopefully crafting a society that's more inclusive and fair.

How changes in politics affect government institutions

This administration has definitely seen its fair share, if not more, than a fair share, 0of chaos, with plenty arguing it's torn down long-standing government structures. Whenever there's a change in who holds power, it involves revisiting old policies. But Trump's era hasn't been business as usual. Rapid-fire, controversial decisions have left many government agencies in a mess.

Lots have been shown out in favor, it seems, due more political loyalty than merit. Science has taken a backseat, expertise brushed aside, and our international relations have taken a hit. The U.S.'s global standing has dimmed, as many see its leader's actions as rash and nationalistic.

Moreover, this administration's chase after personal gain has chipped away at public trust. The blatant use and abuse, according some, political power in favor financial gain has been glaring, leaving many wondering about their leaders' integrity.

Ways we can mend what's broken

Fixing up our federal agencies, left barely functional, won't be a cakewalk. Key institutions, whether in public health, justice, and scientific progress, need careful rebuilding. Places like CDC deserve hefty investment and restructuring if they're regain their spot as health leaders.

Yet, just going back 'how things were' won't cut it. We need stronger institutions, ones ready withstand any future authoritarian threats. This isn't easy in an increasingly divided nation.

Some experts talk about a modern-day "Reconstruction" similar post-Civil War efforts, but times have changed so much that today's efforts need be uniquely tailored these modern challenges.

Holding folks accountable and ensuring justice

It's vital hold those responsible during Trump's tenure accountable, both justice and as a deterrent. Allegations include human rights abuses and even war crimes. But do politicians really have heart chase these charges?

The dangers not holding big names accountable are real. Ignoring prior transgressions, like what happened on January 6th, sets a worrying precedent. Without consequences, future democratic violations might just slip through.

With elections looming, stakes are higher than ever. Post-Trump, our nation's trajectory will define much more than policy—they'll shape democracy itself.

We've got stay engaged and vigilant. Citizens need demand transparency, accountability, and a real commitment democratic values from leaders.

When Trump's time ultimately ends, it's our chance reflect and rebuild. Moving forward means resilience, courage, and a shared devotion democracy, justice, and equality. As we face uncertain times, let's remember each us holds power bring about change.
