Joey Cifelli: From Champion Diver to Inspirational Youth Coach
Coaching young athletes is a unique challenge that encompasses managing the expectations of parents, addressing the diverse needs of athletes, and crafting a strategy to enhance both performance and personal growth. For Joey Cifelli, his journey as a diver and coach has been fueled by these complexities, along with his passion for the sport.
Joey Cifelli's diving career began with his participation in NCAA Division I, representing Purdue University. He showed remarkable talent by qualifying for the NCAA Championships in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. His ambitions even led him to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team, while also excelling academically as an Academic All Big Ten athlete.
Achievements and Milestones
During the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Cifelli finished among the top 12 competitors, and in subsequent years, he continued to excel, finishing fourth at the World Championships Trials and third at the U.S. Diving National Championships. His achievements include a top-20 finish at the NCAA Championships in 2018. Yet, through all these accomplishments, Cifelli retained a broader perspective on how sports could influence his life beyond the pool.
"The ultimate goal isn't just to win a meet or make a team; it's about developing skills for life," Cifelli reflects. "Sports teach you to handle success and failure every day. You learn to overcome challenges and stress, which is invaluable in adulthood."
From Competitor to Coach
Transitioning from a competitive diver to a coach, Cifelli now imparts the life lessons he has learned to the next generation. "I talk to my athletes about the importance of enjoying the journey," he says. "When you're working towards a goal every day, it's hard to step back and see the bigger picture. But just like in any skill, progress in diving comes from repetition and patience."
As a gay man, Cifelli has found diving to be a platform for self-expression, noting how inclusive the sport can be. "Diving was always a way for me to express myself comfortably," he shares. "Even when I was unsure about other aspects of my identity, diving was a constant."
Life Lessons Beyond the Pool
Cifelli emphasizes that the principles learned in sports—facing emotions and pressure—are applicable in broader life contexts. He aims to prepare his athletes not only for competition but also for life's challenges outside of sports. "Sports give you a chance to confront feelings and situations you'll encounter as an adult," he explains.
Joey Cifelli's journey from a distinguished diver to a mentor and coach demonstrates the power of sports to teach resilience and self-discovery. His experiences and insights make him an ideal role model for young athletes, regardless of their background or aspirations.
