Rutger published: In Memory of Shyyell Diamond Sanchez-McCray: Honoring a Trailblazing Black Trans Activist and Performer

Shyyell Diamond Sanchez-McCray, a true pillar in our LGBTQ+ community, left us far too soon on March 13th in Petersburg, Virginia. At just 42, her vibrant spirit and tirelessness in championing equality and justice were unmatched. Her unexpected departure has created a profound void in our hearts and in our community.

A life dedicated: Advocacy and art

Known lovingly as Mabel by those closest, Shyyell was more than just a name; she was a source and symbol. Her life was dedicated not just in word but in constant action, advocating fiercely against systemic injustice and elevating voices often silenced. As a Black transgender woman, she understood those layers all too well and never hesitated in her fight.

But Shyyell was also a dazzling star on stage, celebrated as a drag performer and a force in drag pageants. Her charisma wasn't just about performance; it was about building a community where everyone felt they belonged. She held titles from numerous pageants and made it her mission—undoubtedly succeeded—to uplift LGBTQ+ businesses and artists everywhere.

A tragic loss: Remembering a shining star

In those early hours on March 13th, police responded grimly, discovering her with gunshot wounds. Despite their swift actions, Shyyell was pronounced dead at her home. The door was found unsecured, and we're still left with more questions than answers. No suspects have been publicly identified, leaving a somber hush in our community.

Shyyell's death isn't just a personal tragedy; it starkly highlights a broader epidemic—violence against our transgender family. She's tragically marked as 2026's first known transgender person in America lost this barbaric violence, a sad reminder that transgender women, especially those who are women are particularly vulnerable.

By using her platform so effectively, she not only brought critical attention but also real help where it was needed most. Her legacy and impact will be cherished and remembered by those she's touched.

Her resilience and talent always stood out, not just enabling dialogues but creating spaces where people truly felt seen and heard. Her legacy isn't just what she did but how she lived, a lesson many who knew her, will carry forward.
