This week in Parliament, something truly remarkable happened during a debate on International Men's Day. Josh Newbury, an openly gay MP, stood up and courageously shared his own story as a survivor. His purpose? To fight against that wall that keeps male victims silent.>
Newbury shed light on how International Men's Day can spark conversations we desperately need. He declared, "Breaking silence involves those with a platform sharing their stories. So here's mine," and he asked others not just listen but join in.>
He took everyone back ten years, painting a vivid picture. Imagine a night out in a strange city, where everything goes dark. He woke up with no memory, just chilling messages from a man he had shared a hotel room with—messages that hinted something terrible had happened.>
"At first, they were just texts asking if I was okay," Newbury recalled, "but then they turned sinister, with him calling me a 'great shag.'">
"It froze me," Newbury shared, "because I couldn't remember how I got back, let alone anything else. He told me how out-of-it I'd been, so how could I have ever consented?">
For weeks, Newbury tried piecing it all together, drowning in silence and lack evidence, which stopped him from going public. "I caught myself thinking, ‘I'm lucky I was unconscious when it happened.' But no one should feel they have accept being somewhere on a ‘lucky' scale," he said.>
His story isn't just a confession; it's a rallying cry. Newbury was adamant: shame should burden perpetrators, not victims. "I hope we can create an environment where men feel brave enough speak out and pursue justice, no matter how tough,” he urged.>
Since July 2024, Josh Newbury has been representing Cannock Chase as a Labour MP. He's a fierce advocate LGBTQ+ rights and men's issues. Before politics, he worked in energy and healthcare, including mental health roles within NHS. Proudly living in Norton Canes with his husband and two children, he brings a rich personal perspective.>
Since its first U.K. observance in 2010, International Men's Day has shed light on male issues like high suicide rates and shorter lifespans. Often misunderstood, this day offers a chance spotlight key challenges, such as mental health and breaking victimhood stigma.>
Newbury's emotional speech serves as a powerful reminder: we need more support and open conversations about male victims sexual assault. His honesty takes us closer fostering an inclusive dialogue on these vital issues.>
As we ponder Newbury's brave words and journey, let us vow create a space where everyone can seek justice without fear or shame.>
