Growing up in West Baltimore: A journey towards self-acceptance

Growing up as an overweight, Black gay kid in West Baltimore wasn't easy. I always felt like I was trying, and failing, at fitting in. Losing my mom at 18, when congestive heart failure took her from me, changed everything. After that, fitness became my mental safe haven, a whole new lifeline, and that's a huge part—maybe even all—of why I started SWEAT DC.

Even at 42, those early struggles still linger. I'm 6'3", 225 pounds, and run a flourishing fitness business, but those childhood fears and insecurities haven't completely left me. They're like ghosts that hang around and shape our personal stories. Battling low self-esteem led me on a quest toward perfection, eventually drawing me toward Washington, D.C. Let's be real, it might just be perfection's capital city!

If you're reading this and nodding along, know that you're definitely not alone.

Dealing with expectations and social pressures in D.C.

In Washington, D.C., it sometimes feels like your resume enters a room before you do. There's this insane pressure around what you've achieved, how much you earn, and yes, how you look. With social media, these pressures double up. We're constantly holding our behind-the-scenes up against someone else's highlights. I get caught up too. I've shared perfect pics with inspirational quotes, only ghosting away when things got tough. And I've played that "strong friend" who never seems in need, even when I was desperately so.

We're all caught in this cycle chasing perfection, but here's what I've learned: perfection? It doesn't exist. Strength blooms from vulnerability.

Seeing vulnerability as strength

As I stepped up as a leader aiming at being that perfect CEO, Brené Brown's "Daring Greatly" came along and hit me square in my core. The idea that vulnerability could be powerful? That was a game-changer. I wanted SWEAT DC not just as a gym, but as a community that embraces realness. "Welcome Home" isn't just a tagline; it's our promise. Here, you can truly be yourself.

But as I worked hard creating this space, I overlooked doing that same work within myself.

From our early days as a 2015 fundraiser in a popup, opening our first brick-and-mortar in 2017, navigating COVID-19, and now planning our fifth location in Shaw by February 2026, life's been a wild ride. Finding healing through self-forgiveness

My toughest battle was definitely internal. I was harsh, constantly asking myself how I could run a fitness company without sporting a fit physique. I even questioned my identity as a gay man because I no longer fit my idea picture.

Then I had a life-altering chat with a fraternity brother. He said, "G, you've got forgive yourself." It was an awakening. Until then, I was all about pushing harder, hiding my flaws. After our talk, I cried. That marked my healing journey's beginning. It hit me: I'd been doing my absolute best under unimaginable circumstances.

So, I stopped beating myself up about not looking like my past self. I started acknowledging new ways I showed strength.

For anyone feeling stuck in a dark place, here's my advice: give yourself some grace. Love yourself through every phase, not just when you're shiny and perfect. Recognize your growth, even if it simply means you're still here.

Building a stronger community

When I created SWEAT, my mission was simple: build a community where people feel worthy as they are. I needed that space too. Now, I'm on a mission extend that message beyond gym walls, reaching deeper parts city I adore. Let's build STRONGER community together.

Strength isn't about being flawless. It comes from learning love imperfect self.

With love and gratitude, Coach G.
