Back in 2009, Sean Ebony Coleman launched Destination Tomorrow, a groundbreaking organization championing LGBTQ+ rights. What's truly remarkable? Coleman made history as he's known as being one extraordinary trailblazer - he was one first transgender African Americans who established and now runs an LGBTQ+ center. At its core, this nonprofit aims at uplifting some most vulnerable members within this community. With Coleman's unwavering vision, Destination Tomorrow has grown, proudly opening doors in Atlanta in 2022 and setting its sights on Washington D.C. come 2024.
Destination Tomorrow doesn't just offer support, it embraces a holistic care philosophy. Their belief? That thorough, all-encompassing assistance can curb those emergency situations. Their programs span from education and financial help, right down housing and essential healthcare services. “Our mission,” Coleman passionately states, “is about lifting up our community, fostering empowerment, and ensuring sustained growth.”
Political shifts, especially during administrations like Trump-Vance, have thrown hurdles in paths organizations such as Destination Tomorrow. Coleman sheds light on fear and uncertainty casting shadows over community: “There was initial disbelief at how widespread anti-trans rhetoric became. We realized we had respond effectively,” Coleman explains.
Yet, despite these uphill battles, they've seen community members flocking in numbers. “People seek connection, and they're finding it here,” Coleman shares with pride. “Our thorough assessments guide them through resources we provide.”
Destination Tomorrow plays a cherished role in house and ballroom scenes, bringing people together in celebrations and solidarity. Excitedly, Coleman reveals, "We're planning a ball - it means so much our young folks, especially trans youth.” Having spaces where voices are heard and futures envisioned holds immense power.
Amid growth, safety remains a priority. “We're ramping up security and extending hours so everyone feels safe, whether they're here meetings or events,” Coleman emphasizes.
Partnerships are pivotal in advancing LGBTQ+ rights. “Tackling these issues isn't one-organization job,” Coleman points out. “Collaboration crafts an inclusive, supportive environment.” With WorldPride approaching in Washington D.C., it sets a perfect stage uniting communities and showcasing resilience.
Allyship holds weight, and Coleman underscores its importance. “It's critical that allies make room Black and brown trans voices,” Coleman insists. “Let those directly affected speak their truth.”
Destination Tomorrow doesn't just assist, they strategize. Workforce development's at heart their mission. “Our Pride Work program exemplifies how development should encompass whole community,” Coleman explains. Thriving in New York City, it's now heading Washington D.C., too.
Engaging with officials forms strategic backbone. “We're in conversations with elected officials, letting them know what we need,” Coleman says. “It's their time act, supporting us tangibly.”
As conversation wraps, Coleman's call engagement resounds. “We're wide awake now,” he declares. “We may have overlooked political involvement before, but tides are turning. It's time advocate fiercely our rights and futures.”
Destination Tomorrow, as it continues its journey, shines as beacon hope empowerment LGBTQ+ communities United States-wide.
