Rutger published: Defense Secretary Orders Removal of Harvey Milk's Name from Navy Ship

In a decision stirring up quite a bit and making waves, Defense Secretary Pete Hegsetthas ordered that a Navy ship named after Harvey Milk, a renowned gay rights activist and military veteran, be renamed. Harvey Milk's legacy as a champion with massive contributions in fighting and advocating hard-won LGBTQ+ rights can't be downplayed. It does feel like removing his name—especially during Pride Month—is being seen by many as a regressive move away from inclusivity.

Changing a ship's name isn't something that happens every day, and doing it during Pride Month has only added fuel. A military official mentioned this was a deliberate move, intended supposedly, they claim, "to reestablish a warrior culture" within our armed forces.

Remembering Harvey Milk's Legacy

Harvey Milk didn't just talk about change; he lived it. He served in our Navy during Korea and was a trailblazer in gay rights. Sadly, because he was gay, he got an "other than honorable" discharge—a harsh reminder about how bad discrimination runs. In 2012, folks in San Francisco pushed back, urging that a ship be named in his honor. And they succeeded—by 2016, Harvey Milk's name was right there alongside other civil rights icons like Lucy Stone and Sojourner Truth.

But taking Milk's name off now? That's brought out strong reactions from all corners. Nancy Pelosi minced no words, calling it a "shameful, vindictive erasure." Does this strengthen us as a nation? She doesn't think so and argues it chips away at honoring those who've pushed society toward being more inclusive.

Anger from veterans and advocates

The progressive veterans at VoteVets didn't sit quietly either. They slammed this as a "calculated act" aimed squarely at disrespecting Milk and looking down on his legacy. To them, it feels like more than just a name change—it's part and parcel with an agenda pushing out those who don't fit Hegset's narrow views. And doing it during Pride Month? Feels like a punch in gut.

There are whispers that other ships named after big historical figures—like Thurgood Marshall, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Harriet Tubman—might be on a chopping block too. You can't help but wonder: Is this leading toward wiping away contributions those from diverse backgrounds have made in military history?

The message about diversity and inclusion

Hegset's latest actions seem part and parcel with a larger pattern, backed by critics who see them as trying hard and fast at reshaping military culture. He's made no secret about opposing LGBTQ+ inclusion, outright opposing dropping policies that prevented gay folks from enlisting openly.

His tenure's seen moves like barring transgender people from joining, much panned as flat-out discrimination. Sure, they claim this affects "troop readiness"—but tell that one again. Transgender members have served openly, no hiccups. At least one judge says this ban comes from bias, not facts on ground.

To countless supporters, yanking Milk's name from a Navy ship represents an ongoing battle against rolling back hard-fought wins by marginalized folks—be it within military ranks or reaching beyond them.
