Rutger published: Big Boys Returns for Its Third and Final Season on Channel 4

Big Boys, the popular comedic series on Channel 4, is set to return for a third and final season. Fans of the show, which has captured audiences with its heartfelt humor and relatable characters, will be both excited and emotional as the series comes to a close.

The series follows the journey of Jack, a freshman at the fictional University of Brent, portrayed by Dylan Llewellyn, known for his role in Derry Girls. Jack embarks on his university journey while dealing with the grief of losing his father and exploring his own sexuality. The show quickly gained a loyal following, earning nominations for prestigious awards such as the BAFTA and the Royal Television Society award, thanks to its authentic portrayal of friendship and growth.

According to a recent Channel 4 press release, the final season of Big Boys is set to premiere in February. This season will focus on Jack and his friends as they navigate their final year of university, facing the challenges and triumphs that come with approaching adulthood. Viewers can expect to see Jack, along with his friends, tackle dissertations, dating, and the bittersweet milestones of university life.

Creator Jack Rooke has shared his thoughts on bringing the series to a close. He reflects on how Big Boys began as a small comedy-theatre show about grief and friendship at the Edinburgh Fringe. Rooke expresses his gratitude and surprise at how the show evolved into a beloved sitcom cherished by many. "Ten years ago," Rooke explains, "I took a rather ramshackle comedy-theatre hour about grief and friendship to a damp cave at the Edinburgh Fringe and never thought a decade later it’d be a silly, sweet little sitcom about a lad’s lad and a dweeby gay becoming best mates."

Rooke also shares a personal insight, mentioning that a close friend and therapist suggested the series might be subconsciously about his own difficulty in saying goodbye to certain people and times in his life. "To give this show a final send-off is a huge honor," he says. "I’ve known the ending since the pilot and I hope it still represents those first Edinburgh shows but also the collaborative genius of our incredible cast, crew and creative team."

The final season promises to deliver emotional and comedic moments as the characters face the reality of life after university. Peggy and Shannon, two beloved characters, will embark on new romantic adventures, facing the joys and challenges of relationships and "never-ending nappy changes." Meanwhile, Jack and his friend Danny will experience the strain and testing of their friendship as they come to terms with the impending "proper adult life" that awaits them.

As the series bids farewell, fans are encouraged to reflect on the journey Big Boys has taken them on. The blend of humor, heart, and authenticity has made it a standout show that resonates with audiences on multiple levels. With its unique blend of comedy and drama, Big Boys has made a lasting impact in the landscape of television.
