September 11, 2018, stands out as a deeply personal day in Ryan Russell's life. Not because he achieved something on a football field, but because he lost his dear friend and college roommate, Joe Gilliam, who succumbed after a brave battle with cancer. Throughout Joe's fight, Ryan was there, supporting him every step, even dedicating his game cleats in 2017 as a tribute. Despite his own struggles, Joe was always there with a word or gesture, comforting Ryan through a rough breakup. "He was so supportive," Ryan remembers, showing just how strong their bond was.
After Joe passed, Ryan found himself reflecting on what truly mattered. It was during this period that he decided he needed a change — it was time he embraced who he really was. So, with courage in his heart, Ryan announced through ESPN that he was bisexual, ready at last, he said, "to live openly and authentically." He voiced it plainly: he's not just a football player. He proudly stated, "My truth encompasses being a talented football player, a damn good writer, a loving son, an overbearing brother, a caring friend, a loyal lover, and a bisexual man."
Ryan's journey speaks volumes about more than just being a bisexual athlete. It's about embracing who you truly are in a society that often pressures you otherwise. By sharing his own story, Ryan hopes he'll encourage others not only on football fields but everywhere, creating a space where living your truth isn't just accepted, it's celebrated.
