Rutger published: UK Law to Prohibit Online Content Depicting Choking

The UK government has decided it's time they step in and address a serious issue: harmful online content. They're gearing up with a plan that aims at banning pornographic material showing acts like strangulation or choking. This move isn't just out there on its own; it's part and parcel with a larger Crime and Policing Bill that's making its rounds in parliament as we speak.

Making it a Serious Crime

So, what's really changing here? The proposal wants distributing or even just having this kind pornography classified as a "priority offense," putting it on a serious pedestal alongside child sexual exploitation and terrorist content. Liz Kendall, who runs things in Science and Technology, has stressed how critical this measure really could be. She told BBC, “Watching and spreading this type remains not just shocking; it incites danger. Those involved in creating or sharing these images are promoting a culture based on violence and abuse, and we have a duty as a society, in our communities, and in our homes, from which it must be removed.”

A Push Towards New Laws

Why now? Well, there are some downright alarming stats about young people's sexual behaviors pushing this shift. YouGov did a survey that laid it out: about 27% men from 18-29 have admitted they've choked their partners during sex, and 33% women in that same age group say they've been on receiving end. And there was a BBC poll in 2019 that reported 38% women aged 18-39 had been subjected at some point. What does that tell us? It tells us that what needs doing right now.

These numbers come on top from a fresh review from February digging through impacts from “degrading, violent, and misogynistic” porn. This review noted a large UK chunk—actually more than a quarter—regularly, like clockwork, views porn online, with a third men checking such content weekly. Sounds like a lot, doesn't it?

Challenges With Normalized Violence

The review was led by Conservative peer Baroness Gabby Bertine, and she didn't mince words about concerns over how commonplace violent behavior has gotten during sex, especially aimed at women. “Head over onto main pages at any big site, and you'll see all these degrading visuals front and center, typically skewed against women,” she observed.

There are disturbing stories shared, too. Can you imagine a 14-year-old asking about proper choking methods during sex? It sounds extreme, illustrating how dangerous normalizing these acts can become.

But let's not sugarcoat this: Not everyone thinks this bill's going fix everything. Fiona Mackenzie, who started We Can't Consent To This, isn't so convinced it'll work wonders. She noted laws against showing choking in porn already exist, yet seem half-hearted on enforcement. “Over five years ago, young women were yelling about strangulation being normal because social media spun it as passion. Porn sites keep pushing this harmful narrative, yet they've dodged any real penalty,” she commented.

Looking Ahead: Change on Its Way?

Mackenzie also shared some thoughts on where new laws might lead. “Sure, changing laws need action. But until it actually happens, it'll be hard convincing anyone real-world change will follow.” There's some tentative hope among advocates that maybe, just maybe, this round, our government might take bold and effective steps.

This legislative push undoubtedly sits as a key effort by UK in standing against online content encouraging violence and misuse. As parliament sorts through details, we'll have our eyes peeled on how it gets rolled out and enforced whether substantial social norms reformation happens along protecting individuals from these dreadful acts.

We'd love hearing from you folks on this. Please drop your thoughts below—just keep it courteous and constructive while discussing these intricate issues together.
