Rutger published: Trump's Misleading Claims on LGBTQ+ Support

Donald Trump recently asserted that he "did great with the gay population" during the 2024 US elections. However, statistical data seems to contradict this claim.

The 79-year-old former US president made this assertion during a conference held at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The event took place on Saturday, November 29, and a video clip from the event captured Trump engaging with members of the MAGA-affiliated group, Gays for Trump.

In the video, Trump can be heard asking, "Where's Gays for Trump?" and a supporter responds, "We're over here." Trump then jokingly remarked, "You don't look gay," followed by his claim, "We did great with the gay population, as you know."

Contrary Evidence from Exit Polls

Despite Trump's confident statements, exit polls suggest a different narrative. According to data published by CNN immediately after the November 2024 elections, only 12 percent of LGBTQ+ voters cast their ballots for Trump. In stark contrast, 86 percent supported his opponent, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

This pattern of low support is not new for Trump. Historical data from his earlier political campaigns reveal a similar trend. In 2016, only 14 percent of LGBTQ+ voters supported him, a figure that did not improve significantly in subsequent elections.

Ongoing Unpopularity Among LGBTQ+ Communities

Trump's unpopularity among LGBTQ+ communities can be traced to his administration's policies, which were often perceived as hostile to LGBTQ+ rights. These policies include a ban on transgender individuals serving in the US military, the closure of a crucial LGBTQ+ suicide prevention hotline, and the removal of essential HIV and LGBTQ+ related information from federal health websites.

Additionally, during his first term, Trump attempted to roll back non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. These efforts included allowing federal programs like Social Security, Medicare, and housing services to deny benefits based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Community Reactions and Criticisms

Even within the Gays for Trump organization, there has been some criticism of Trump's approach to LGBTQ+ issues. Peter Boykin, the group's founder, has expressed reservations about Trump's alignment with social conservative policies that he believes do not resonate well with LGBTQ+ communities.

Boykin stated that many people appreciated Trump because he was not seen as a traditional social conservative. However, he believes Trump has been influenced by "the wrong people" regarding LGBTQ+ issues.

Recent data indicates that Trump's policies have left a lasting negative impression on LGBTQ+ individuals in the US. A significant 71 percent of LGBTQ+ adults feel that Trump's actions have adversely affected LGBTQ+ rights in the country, whereas only 6 percent believe he has positively influenced these rights.

The Broader GOP Perspective

Interestingly, discontent is not limited to LGBTQ+ Democrats. Among LGBTQ+ Republicans, 37 percent feel the current GOP administration is too harsh on transgender people, and 20 percent extend this sentiment to the broader LGBTQ+ community.

These statistics paint a clear picture that contradicts Trump's claims of widespread support from the LGBTQ+ population. Despite his statements, the data suggests that the majority of LGBTQ+ Americans have consistently opposed Trump's policies and the rhetoric he has promoted throughout his political career.

In conclusion, while Trump has made bold assertions about his popularity within the LGBTQ+ community, the numbers tell a different story. His tenure in office was marked by policies that many viewed as detrimental to LGBTQ+ rights, contributing to his low support among these voters. As the political landscape continues to evolve, LGBTQ+ individuals and allies remain vigilant in advocating for policies that promote equality and fairness for all.
