Trans Prisoner Zoe Watts Denied Vital Medication in Custody, Say Supporters
Concerns have been raised by activists regarding the treatment of Zoe Watts, a transgender prisoner who is reportedly being denied essential medication while in custody. According to supporters, Watts, a former police worker from Lincolnshire, is currently held in the male section of HMP Peterborough in Cambridgeshire despite having the necessary documentation to be housed with female inmates.
Zoe Watts was arrested in December on charges including possession of a firearm prohibited for five years, possession without a certificate, and firearm manufacturing. Following her arrest, Watts was placed in the male prison wing, a decision that has faced criticism from advocacy groups.
Justice4ZoeWatts, an activist group campaigning for her rights, has alleged that "Zoe no longer has access to crucial medications needed for her health." The medications in question are sertraline, an antidepressant, and estradiol valerate, a synthetic estrogen used in hormone replacement therapy.
A spokesperson from Justice4ZoeWatts stated, "Zoe has not received her prescribed medications for a week, which are essential for her health and mental well-being. Given that she is confined to her cell for over 23 hours a day, this neglect is especially concerning." The group claims that while they have raised this issue multiple times with the prison's healthcare staff, they have yet to receive a response.
Despite possessing a gender recognition certificate, which legally recognizes her as female in the UK, and a female birth certificate, Watts remains in the male prison. Government policy typically mandates that transgender women with the appropriate documentation, who have not been charged with sexual violence, should be housed in women’s prisons.
During a recent protest outside Lincoln Crown Court, supporters of Zoe Watts gathered to express their disapproval of her incarceration conditions. The protest aimed to bring attention to Watts' situation and called for her transfer to the female wing of the prison. Watts herself has alleged that she has faced aggressive treatment from prison officers and has been subjected to transphobic language, further exacerbating her mental distress.
In a statement, Watts highlighted the broader implications of her situation, stating, “This issue is bigger than just me; it impacts all trans men, trans women, and non-binary people who may be subject to outdated classification systems. It’s a reflection of societal lag in recognizing gender identity rights.”
Adding to her concerns, Justice4ZoeWatts reported that male prisoners have been harassing her by banging on her cell window as they pass by, which has increased her safety risks. The presence of a transgender woman in a male prison has drawn significant attention from other inmates, according to the group.
An inquiry for comment from the prison administration at HMP Peterborough has been made, but there has yet to be an official response regarding the allegations or future actions to address Watts' situation.
This case sheds light on the challenges faced by transgender individuals within the penal system, particularly concerning their safety, health, and gender recognition. As activists continue to advocate for Zoe Watts, her case underscores the urgent need for reforms that ensure the rights and well-being of transgender prisoners are respected and upheld.
The treatment of Zoe Watts in prison has sparked a broader discussion about the systemic issues transgender individuals encounter in incarceration settings, highlighting the necessity for policies that align with modern understandings of gender identity and legal gender recognition.
