As this exciting football season wraps up, Jake Daniels, known as one-of-a-kind in UK football as an openly gay male professional, isn't just focusing on his game—he's set on sparking change both on and off that grassy pitch.
Back in May 2022, Daniels made headlines by coming out, marking a pivotal moment as he became Britain's first openly gay male professional footballer in over three decades. This courageous step has brought its own set hurdles, setting him apart from his fellow young athletes.
With his social media buzzing and media outlets all wanting a piece, Daniels finds himself in a spotlight that's unfamiliar territory compared with many around him. Yet, he's driven by a bigger purpose: making football an inclusive space.
In search more playtime, Daniels chose a loan move from Blackpool in EFL League One down a few tiers with Warrington Rylands. This clever choice has put him on field more, showcasing exactly what he's got.
Now just 20, Daniels has become a starter you can't miss with Northern Premier League team. He stands out, net five goals and many assists, gaining praise from manager Neil Reynolds who calls him a "special talent," especially after his recent two-goal highlight against Leek Town.
Living near Manchester, Daniels shares his journey with his partner, Mark Potts, who runs a casting agency. Their relationship kicked off on Instagram and has only grown since late 2022. Potts often shares their moments together, reflecting their strong and loving partnership.
Recently, Daniels and Potts joined in on Schuh's #TogetherHitsDifferent campaign that's all about embracing LGBTQ inclusion. This campaign, spotlighting talents like embroidery artist Nicole Chui, co-founder Baesianz FC—a team supporting women, trans, and nonbinary folks from Asian backgrounds—shows how shared passions can push change.
Together, Daniels and Chui promote acceptance and a fresh perspective in sports.
In a chat with Gaydio, Daniels shared his resolve in shattering stereotypes and facing down negativity aimed at LGBTQ community. Even with societal progress, he scratches his head at resistance anyone still has toward gay individuals.
"There are so many out gay women playing. Why does it feel so different?" Daniels wondered aloud. "It's baffling that people still harbor hate against being gay," he said. "I never chose it—it's just who I am. I love it, and I think those opposed are missing out. Gay life rocks!"
Daniels joins a slim group openly gay or bisexual male players worldwide, including names like Colling Martin, Josh Cavallo, Andy Brennan, and Jakub Jankto.
He's adamant about seeing leadership step up in men's football. Campaigns like rainbow laces need solid action behind them, pushing inclusivity further.
Even with eyes constantly on him, Daniels stays true on his mission: "There are loads trying make sports more inclusive, and I want my footprint in footballing journey," he said.
With his Blackpool contract nearing its end, Daniels faces a mix uncertainty and anticipation. His stellar time with Warrington Rylands hasn't gone unnoticed by scouts, and he's hopeful about what's coming.
Thankful beyond words, Daniels says, "Everyone at Warrington, fans included, has been incredibly welcoming, like family bond in locker room," he said.
He cherishes support from LGBTQ fans and allies, driving him toward his authentic life and dreamt football career.
As Jake Daniels continues his path in football, he stands as a hopeful beacon and motivator others, eager make sporting arenas more open and accepting worlds.
