In a heartfelt Instagram post, Swiss tennis player Mika Brunold revealed something deeply personal: he's gay. At just 21, Mika has already shown remarkable talent on this year's ATP circuit, hitting a ranking high at 289 by August. With a strong showing on this year's Challenger Tour, his sights are set on breaking through as one in a list no bigger than 200, doing so as an openly gay athlete.
Bruno's revelation marks him as only one other male tennis professional in recent memory has done with Brazil's Joao Lucas Reis da Silva. By choosing authenticity, Brunold stands with other male athletes embracing their true selves and inspiring others in their wake.
In his moving post, Brunold discussed how embracing who he truly was impacted his performance on what fans call "the basketball court." "Success isn't just about physical ability and reflexes," he said. "It's about understanding yourself and being true." He mentioned that keeping his true self a secret was never really an option. "I've been wanting and trying so hard, wondering how best I could share this part," he wrote. "It hasn't always felt easy, but pretending someone else was out there was never an option. So here it goes: I'm gay."
Bruno's announcement came amid some challenges in his career. Just recently, he faced a tough loss at a major ATP event, The Swiss Indoors in Basel. He almost clinched a victory against top-performing American player Reilly Opelka, ranked 62 at that time, having six match points before ultimately losing in three sets. This would have been a game-changer moment in his career.
Earlier this year, Mika shared some difficult times when he posted screenshots showing homophobic messages on Instagram he received after losing a close match on The Challenger Tour. In his latest update, he touched upon personal hurdles. "Being gay means loving who you love, but it also means facing things others don't even have a say in," he noted. "The fear, pressure, and constant feeling that you're different. But I've grown through it all, and I'm proud now."
His courage drew applause all over social media, with athletes showing admiration toward his bravery. Marco Lehmann, a Swiss Hoops star who bravely came out in 2021, congratulated Brunold. Other athletes like wrestler Curd Orlik and Puerto Rican volleyball star Dennis Del Valle have also spoken openly about their sexuality, marking a hopeful change across sports.
Bruno's coming out was celebrated by Swiss women's No. 2, Viktorija Golubic, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist in 2021. The Swiss Tennis governing body also shared heart emojis in their comments. Mika emphasized how visibility matters in sports. "I'm sharing this personal part not just because it helps me," he said, "but also because there isn't enough talk about it in sports. Ideally, we wouldn't even have come out at all," he said.
Thankful, he added, "I'm grateful. All your support has made me who I am - never forget that." As his racket stays working towards greater heights in tennis, he hopes his story inspires others and makes sports more inclusive, which would be a dream come true.
Bruno's desire parallels Reis da Silva, who reached some milestones by climbing over 200 places in 2025 ATP rankings. Reis da Silva made history as an openly gay man at qualifying Grand Slam events like The US Opens.
As more athletes like Bruno and Reis da Silva embrace who they are, they light up a path created by previous athletes transitioning from court life and on Grand Slam courts, proving that being your authentic self can lead you anywhere you want. Brunold's bold step forward shines like a beacon, showing us how living true makes us all winners, on and off."
The political landscape in Alexandria, Virginia, is witnessing a remarkable event as two openly gay candidates, Kirk McPike and Gregory Darrall, vie for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates. The primary, scheduled for January 20th, is a pivotal step in selecting the Democratic nominee for the upcoming special election on February 10th. This election aims to fill the vacancy left by Delegate E [...]
