TikTok personality Grant Gibbs, notable for his role in the influencer duo "A Twink and a Redhead," has issued a public apology following his comments about the sexuality of Crumbl Cookies co-founder Sawyer Hemsley.
On Monday, August 25, Sawyer Hemsley publicly came out as gay in a heartfelt message, addressing the intense online speculation surrounding his personal life. In his statement, Hemsley emphasized the importance of telling his own story rather than letting others define him, saying, "Instead of letting others write my story, I want to share it in my own words."
In response to Hemsley's announcement, Grant Gibbs took to TikTok the following day to express regret over his previous videos, which speculated on Hemsley's sexuality. Gibbs captioned his post, "I'm genuinely sorry I clocked your tea in such a massive way, but I am really happy and proud of you sister @SawyerHemsley."
In the video, Gibbs stated, "This was not my intention to ever out somebody in this way, but girl, I am so happy for you and so proud of you. You are hot, and you're going to live your best out gay open life, mama." He continued by apologizing, "But you guys, I did not mean for this to happen the way it did. I'm so sorry, Sawyer."
Hemsley, who co-founded Crumbl Cookies in 2017 alongside Jason McGowan, has been part of the brand's rapid expansion, which includes over 1,000 locations across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Known for collaborations with celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo, the Jonas Brothers, and the Kardashian-Jenner family, Crumbl Cookies has become a high-profile name in the industry.
The controversy began when Gibbs, in a previous TikTok video that went viral, speculated about Hemsley's sexuality, remarking, "That man is so gay." This sparked a flurry of online discussions, eventually leading to Hemsley's decision to publicly come out.
In his apology, Gibbs acknowledged the impact of his words, saying, "I admit that speculating about his sexuality to my 218,000 followers was nasty of me." He added, "I didn't mean for it to end up like this," and expressed regret that his commentary had gone viral.
Gibbs clarified his stance, claiming that he was merely joining an ongoing conversation already happening online, and insisted that he was commenting on "public information." Nonetheless, he admitted feeling "bad my video went so viral."
Prior to Hemsley's coming-out statement, Gibbs had posted two videos where he humorously but controversially discussed the entrepreneur's sexuality. In a post from August 22, Gibbs expressed surprise about Hemsley's public persona, stating, "That's a gay man, and I'll say it to his face."
In a follow-up video on August 23, Gibbs reiterated his opinion, claiming Hemsley was "definitely closeted in a way that's trying to protect his cash, which I'm kind of annoyed at." He elaborated, "That's my personal gripe with this whole situation," while also noting that "people should not be outed."
Gibbs defended his initial videos by arguing that Hemsley, as a prominent businessman, could handle the situation, saying, "Hemsley is literally a co-founder of many companies and I think he can survive." He concluded by suggesting that Hemsley was "out to the people who need to know," implying that financial concerns motivated his discretion.
Despite the controversy, Hemsley did not address Gibbs' comments directly in his coming-out message. Instead, he focused on the importance of being true to oneself and the freedom that comes with living openly.
