Greet Minnen has been a prominent figure in the world of tennis, known not only for her skills on the court but also for her courage and openness as one of the few out athletes in the sport. Since publicly coming out in 2018 alongside her then-girlfriend Alison Van Uytvanck, Minnen has become a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ issues within tennis.
Recently, Minnen took to social media to highlight the disturbing homophobic threats she continues to receive. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she shared a screenshot showing a series of violent and abusive messages sent by an anonymous user.
“This really has to stop,” Minnen expressed, underscoring that these types of messages are not new to her but remain deeply troubling. The direct message read:
“nice lesbian shit enjoy last month at life degenerate lesbian piece of shit you just killed yourself ape shit enjoy we are coming for you”
Such vile abuse is unfortunately not uncommon in professional tennis. WTA players frequently report receiving aggressive messages, often linked to the rise of sports gambling. Australian player Priscilla Hon has shared her experiences with similar threats, noting that angry bettors who lose money on matches often resort to sending hateful messages.
Minnen’s case underscores a more insidious element as these threats are laced with homophobic intent, which adds another layer of distress. Research shows that LGBTQ+ individuals are disproportionately affected by violence. A 2020 study in Science Advances highlighted that sexual and gender minorities in the U.S. are nearly four times more likely to be victims of violent crime.
In Belgium, where Minnen hails from, nearly half of the recorded hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community involved physical violence, according to Unia, a Belgian human rights organization. This alarming data highlights the urgent need for strong protective measures for athletes like Minnen.
Current measures to protect players from online abuse are inconsistent and lack global enforcement. The French Tennis Federation has taken steps by introducing AI moderation at Roland Garros to manage social media interactions and organizing the first Pride Day celebration. However, these systems do not cover direct messages, like the abuse Minnen received.
Furthermore, in 2019, the French Federation launched a toll-free support line for players to address online threats and mental health concerns. While this is a positive step, it highlights the inadequacy of having a mere patchwork of initiatives without a comprehensive, unified approach.
Could the formation of a players' union help address these issues more effectively? The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), established in 2019, aims to represent players' interests but lacks the full support of the women's tour and a clear agenda. A true international tennis union might provide the collective bargaining power needed to enforce standardized protections at all tournaments.
Currently, tennis players operate as independent contractors, which limits their access to the support and protection that athletes in team sports receive. A union could negotiate for basic standards of online protection and mental health support for players, especially those from marginalized communities.
As Minnen and others continue to endure threats without adequate recourse, the call for organized labor power in tennis becomes more pressing. Such a union could be pivotal in championing the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ players, ensuring the sport is inclusive and safe for all.
Ultimately, the road to change requires collective effort from players, organizations, and fans alike to foster a culture that rejects hate and celebrates diversity.
