The writer of Pixar's Lightyear has robustly defended the film's inclusion of LGBTQ+ themes following criticism from rapper Snoop Dogg. In response, Lauren Gunderson, the screenwriter responsible for introducing the lesbian couple to the storyline, stood firm in her decision. Through a heartfelt post on social media, Gunderson explained the thought and intention behind the inclusion of Alisha's relationship with Kiko.

"So, I created the LIGHTYEAR lesbians," Gunderson proudly declared in her post. Reflecting on her time at Pixar in 2018, she described the studio as an inspiring environment where innovative storytelling was encouraged. As the narrative for Lightyear evolved, she felt it was natural to write "she" instead of "he" when designing a partner for Alisha Hawthorne.

Gunderson elaborated on the significance of this choice. "As small as that detail is in the film, I knew the representational effect it could have," she noted. "Small line, big deal.
