The Pride Liberation Project, recognized as Virginia’s largest student-led LGBTQ advocacy group, has recently announced a series of protests targeting school board meetings across the state. This mobilization comes as a direct response to escalating anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and policies perceived to be emanating from the current federal administration.
In a statement released to the public, Conifer Selintung, a representative of the Pride Liberation Project, condemned the administration’s actions. "Since taking office, the Trump-Musk administration has unleashed a barrage of attacks against LGBTQIA+ students," Selintung declared. Concerns were specifically raised about efforts to weaken discrimination protections under Title IX, the targeting of transgender athletes, and attempts to defund gender-affirming healthcare. "The administration’s obsession with queer young people is already impacting our lives. Defying medical consensus, multiple hospitals suspended gender-affirming care last month," Selintung added.
The organization has been proactive in rallying support from students throughout Virginia. Each protest not only aims to raise awareness but also to encourage communities to stand in solidarity against policies they believe marginalize LGBTQ youth.
Red O’Brien, a junior from Virginia Beach, voiced their concerns about the current political landscape, saying, "These executive orders are attacking our communities instead of focusing on the real issues in our schools." O’Brien, who is planning to participate in the upcoming rally at their local school board meeting, emphasized the need for student voices to be heard.
Another student, Everest Clauberg, who attends Virginia Commonwealth University, shared a personal perspective on how these policies affect their life. "I’m an adult–it’s crazy and invasive that legislators can stop me from getting lifesaving healthcare," said Clauberg, who relies on gender-affirming care provided by VCU Endocrinology. Such care is vital for many transgender and non-binary individuals, and any disruption can have profound impacts on their well-being.
Significantly, VCU Children’s Hospital of Richmond announced on February 25 that it would resume gender-affirming care for existing patients as deemed appropriate, providing relief to many families and individuals affected by previous suspensions.
The Pride Liberation Project has a notable history of activism and advocacy. In recent years, they have organized over 90 student-led protests across Virginia, each event designed to draw public attention and lobby for policy changes that support LGBTQ students. These efforts have not only raised awareness but have also fostered stronger alliances within the community and beyond.
The group’s activism reflects a broader movement advocating for the rights and well-being of LGBTQ individuals in educational settings. By organizing these protests, the Pride Liberation Project not only challenges the status quo but also empowers young people to take a stand and make their voices heard.
The issue with current policies, as highlighted by the group, touches on several key areas affecting LGBTQ students and educators. These include the erosion of protections that prevent discrimination in schools, restrictions on curriculum that addresses LGBTQ history and issues, and limitations on healthcare access for transgender students.
The upcoming rallies across Virginia aim to galvanize support from students, educators, and community members alike. The Pride Liberation Project hopes to create a formidable coalition that can exert pressure on school boards to enact more inclusive and supportive policies.
"It’s crucial that we keep pushing back against these harmful policies," said Selintung. "We need to ensure that our schools are safe spaces for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity."
As the political climate continues to shift, the voices of young activists like those in the Pride Liberation Project are more important than ever. Their dedication to creating a better, more inclusive future serves as an inspiration to many within the LGBTQ community and beyond.
With each protest and each statement, they are not only challenging current policies but are also laying the groundwork for a more equitable and just society.
Through collective effort and persistent advocacy, the Pride Liberation Project remains committed to fighting for the rights and dignity of all LGBTQ students across Virginia.
Their message is clear: Everyone deserves an education free of discrimination and fear. And as long as there are policies that threaten that ideal, the Pride Liberation Project will continue to stand firm in their resolve.
