Olly Alexander: The Queer Icon's Journey from Music to Activism

Actor, singer, and all-around queer icon Olly Alexander has captured the hearts of many with his vibrant personality and talent. Best known as the lead singer of the band Years & Years, Olly has also made a name for himself through his acting and activism. This weekend, he will appear on Michael McIntyre's Big Show, following the release of his acclaimed new album, Polari.

Originally from a small town in North Yorkshire, Olly rose to fame as the charismatic frontman of Years & Years. Alongside his musical achievements, he captivated audiences with his acting in Russell T Davies's celebrated series It's A Sin, which poignantly portrays the lives of young gay men during the AIDS crisis in the UK.

The Rise of a Queer Icon

Olly has been open about his sexuality since Years & Years won the BBC's Sound of 2015. His openness has been a source of inspiration for many, as he uses his platform to advocate for issues such as safer sex practices and HIV awareness. But what else do we know about this talented and outspoken star?

Olly Alexander's Love Life

In terms of his personal life, Olly was previously in a relationship with musician Neil Milan Amin-Smith from the band Clean Bandit. They parted ways in 2015 due to their demanding schedules. Reflecting on the split, Olly shared with Attitude Magazine that the pressures of limited time together took a toll on their relationship.

In a playful revelation, Olly once admitted to having a "crush" on former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, expressing admiration for Corbyn's apparent readiness to participate in marches and protests. More recently, in 2022, it was reported that Olly was "in love," although he chose to keep the identity of his partner private. Currently, Olly appears to be single, as he has not been publicly linked with anyone else since.

From Band Member to Solo Artist

Years & Years was initially formed in 2010, and Olly joined later as the lead vocalist. Their breakthrough single, "King," topped the UK charts in 2015, solidifying their international fame. However, in 2021, the band transitioned into a solo project with Olly at the helm. The decision to go solo, as Olly described, was like a marriage ending amicably. Under the Years & Years name, he released the album Night Call, marking a new chapter in his musical journey.

A Daring Eurovision Performance

In 2024, Olly took a bold step by representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest. His performance of the song "Dizzy" was highly anticipated, though it ultimately placed 18th. Despite the result, Olly's participation was marked by controversy due to geopolitical tensions. Many artists, including Olly, were urged to boycott the contest in protest of the ongoing conflict involving Israel and Palestine.

Olly, along with other Eurovision performers, released a statement on social media expressing their solidarity with oppressed communities and calling for peace. Their message emphasized the privilege of participating in such a global event and the duty to speak out against injustices, including antisemitism and islamophobia.

Continuing to Inspire

Olly Alexander continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. His fearless advocacy, coupled with his artistic talents, ensures that his voice remains influential in both music and social activism. As he appears on Michael McIntyre's Big Show, fans can expect more of Olly's charm and authenticity that have made him such a beloved figure.

Whether through his music, acting, or activism, Olly Alexander shows no signs of slowing down. His journey is a testament to living authentically and using one's platform to effect positive change.

Catch Olly on Michael McIntyre's Big Show airing at 8:10 pm on BBC. Other guests include comedians Josh Widdicombe and Justin Hawkins.
