Rutger published: Muslim Organizations Strongly Condemn the Tragic Killing of Openly Gay Imam Muhsin Hendricks

In a distressing and tragic incident, South African Muslim organizations have come together to strongly denounce the murder of Muhsin Hendricks, recognized widely as the first openly gay imam. Hendricks, aged 57, was a beloved figure who courageously led a mosque in Cape Town, offering a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ individuals and other marginalized Muslim communities. His untimely death has sent shockwaves throughout the community and beyond.

According to reports, Hendricks was travelling near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape Province when his vehicle was ambushed. A hooded individual reportedly emerged from a pickup truck that had obstructed Hendricks' path, and fired shots into his car, resulting in his tragic death on the morning of February 15th.

While investigations are still underway, there are unverified reports suggesting that Hendricks had recently officiated a wedding for a lesbian couple, though this has yet to be confirmed. The motives behind this heinous act remain unclear, but there are concerns that it may have been driven by animosity towards Hendricks’ progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights within the Muslim community.

Muslim Judicial Council's Response

In response to this horrific act, the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) of South Africa issued a powerful statement condemning the killing in the strongest terms possible. They spoke out against any acts of violence targeting individuals based on their sexual orientation or any other aspect of their identity. The MJC emphasized their commitment to peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, even in the face of differing viewpoints.

"It has been alleged that the killing may have been motivated by hatred toward Muhsin Hendricks due to his views on same-sex relationships," their statement read. "While the MJC has consistently maintained that Muhsin's position is incompatible with Islamic teachings, we unequivocally condemn his murder and any acts of violence targeting members of the LGBTQ community or any other community."

The MJC extended their heartfelt sympathies to Hendricks' loved ones during this incredibly difficult time and called for peace and justice to prevail.

United Ulama Council's Stand

Similarly, the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) expressed their disagreement with Imam Hendricks' teachings on same-sex relationships. However, they were equally firm in condemning all forms of extrajudicial killings, stressing that such acts undermine the rule of law and contribute to societal instability.

They urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and making assumptions that could escalate tensions. "We consequently call on everyone to act responsibly, avoid spreading unverified information, and refrain from making assumptions that have the potential to heighten tension and put others at risk, based on mere suspicion," the UUCSA stated.

They emphasized the importance of allowing law enforcement to carry out their investigations diligently, ensuring that justice is served based on evidence and due process.

Ongoing Investigation

South Africa's Deputy Justice Minister, Andries Nel, informed Newzroom Afrika that the police are making significant progress in tracking down the suspects involved in this appalling crime. He indicated that authorities are "hot on the heels" of those responsible, offering some hope for justice to the grieving community.

In his remarks, Deputy Minister Nel praised Muhsin Hendricks, describing him as "a South African that we can all be proud of, a South African that we can all aspire to be." His words serve as a poignant reminder of the profound impact Hendricks had on many lives and the legacy he leaves behind as a champion of inclusivity and acceptance.

The tragic loss of Muhsin Hendricks has highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, both within South Africa and globally. It underscores the urgent need for continued advocacy and dialogue to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, can live without fear of violence or persecution.

As the community mourns the loss of a trailblazer whose work paved the way for many, the call for justice and respect for diversity grows ever stronger. The hope is that through collective efforts, society can move towards a more inclusive and understanding future.
