Rutger published: Matt Bomer Lends His Voice to 10th Anniversary Audiobook of Acclaimed Novel 'A Little Life'

Actor Matt Bomer is expanding his repertoire as one of Hollywood’s prominent figures in queer storytelling by taking on a new and emotionally demanding project. He will be the voice behind the audiobook of Hanya Yanagihara’s critically acclaimed and socially polarizing novel, A Little Life, marking its tenth anniversary.

Yanagihara’s A Little Life has been celebrated as a modern literary classic, chronicling the intertwined lives of four friends residing in New York City. These characters are brought to life through their journey from young adulthood into their later years. Among the central characters are JB, a queer visual artist; Willem, a gay actor; Malcolm, a straight architect; and Jude, a gay litigator. Jude's story is particularly poignant, as it unfolds the extreme, lifelong trauma he endures, including physical, verbal, and sexual abuse, which leads to his battles with severe depression and self-harm.

Matt Bomer, known for his performances in various queer-focused films and television projects, such as Fellow Travelers, The Boys in the Band, Maestro, and Will & Grace, expressed his deep connection to Yanagihara’s work. He shared, “Reading the book changed me as a person. It’s an honor to be given the chance to bring these compelling characters and their stories to life through my voice.”

Bomer added that the process of recording the audiobook was both a profound responsibility and a labor of love. He noted having to take "walking breaks" to clear his mind after intense sessions, highlighting the emotional toll involved in engaging with the novel’s heavy themes.

Impact of A Little Life and Its Reception

A Little Life has been both lauded and critiqued for its unflinching exploration of trauma and resilience. While many consider it a masterpiece, others view it as "trauma porn" due to its depiction of explicit abuse and self-harm. Despite the polarizing opinions, the novel has garnered significant attention and discussion within literary circles. With nearly 800,000 reviews on GoodReads, it holds an impressive average rating of 4.31 out of five stars.

Author Hanya Yanagihara has faced criticism for her portrayal of gay male characters, as a female writer. However, she defends her right to explore diverse narratives, arguing that her work should be judged on its execution rather than the demographics of its author. “It’s very dangerous to suggest that a writer can only write from their own personal experiences,” Yanagihara stated in an interview with The Guardian in 2022.

From Page to Stage

In addition to its literary acclaim, A Little Life was adapted into a stage production in 2023, featuring actor James Norton in the role of Jude. Although the play received a mixed reception, it further cemented the novel’s impact on contemporary storytelling and its exploration of complex themes of identity and struggle.

Matt Bomer’s involvement in the audiobook is part of a broader engagement with stories that reflect queer experiences and challenges. He has previously lent his voice to audiobooks such as James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room and Trent Preszler’s Little And Often, both of which delve into themes of alienation and the societal rejection of queer identities.

Looking Ahead

Following his emotionally intensive work on A Little Life, Bomer is set to feature in a lighter, yet still meaningful project. He stars in the upcoming queer comedy Mid-Century Modern, inspired by The Golden Girls, alongside actor Nathan Lane. This project promises a blend of humor and heart, offering a refreshing counterbalance to the intense material of Yanagihara’s novel.

With the audiobook of A Little Life set to release in February, fans of both Bomer and Yanagihara are eagerly anticipating the new dimensions that Bomer’s voice will bring to this beloved, yet challenging, narrative.
