Anheuser-Busch, the renowned beer company, has recently decided to withdraw its sponsorship from a prominent local Pride festival, marking the end of a partnership that spanned more than three decades. This decision has left Pride St. Louis, the festival organizers, facing a significant financial shortfall.
"We are devastated this year that our hometown brewer, Anheuser-Busch, has declined to sponsor PrideFest," Pride St. Louis announced in a statement. The organization emphasized the profound disappointment and financial strain this decision has caused, especially as many sponsors have already reduced their contributions.
The festival is now facing a $150,000 deficit compared to previous years, largely due to the loss of Anheuser-Busch’s sponsorship. This financial gap threatens the scope and scale of the festival, known for celebrating diversity and inclusion in the St. Louis area.
Jordan Braxton, Director of Diversity, Inclusion, and Outreach at Pride St. Louis, expressed the emotional impact of the decision. "They decided after 30 years they would no longer sponsor our event," Braxton said. "That hurt us very much because we are all homegrown here in St. Louis."
The move by Anheuser-Busch to pull out of the St. Louis Pride festival mirrors its earlier decision to withdraw sponsorship from San Francisco’s upcoming Pride celebration. According to Braxton, this trend reflects broader societal challenges, particularly the current political climate's influence on corporate decisions regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
University marketing expert Eric Rhiney commented on the situation, suggesting that Anheuser-Busch’s decision might be a response to backlash from its primary consumer base. This backlash, intensified by a controversial social media campaign, has led to calls for boycotts and strong reactions from conservative groups.
In response to the loss of sponsorship, Pride St. Louis has initiated a fundraising effort, the #45for45 campaign, aiming to secure community donations to support its 45th annual festival. This campaign seeks to unite the community in maintaining the vibrancy and inclusivity that the festival has championed for decades.
Local businesses have also taken a stand in support of the LGBTQIA+ community. Rehab Bar and Grill, along with other local establishments, have decided to cease selling Anheuser-Busch products as a form of protest. "As a community, we have been continuously targeted in all aspects of our lives," said Chad Fox, owner of Rehab Bar and Grill. "While for many years corporations have, in some respects, led efforts in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the decision by Anheuser-Busch— a long-standing sponsor of St. Louis PrideFest—to end their sponsorship is yet another targeted attack on our LGBTQIA+ community."
Greenfinch Theater and Dive, another local business, announced plans to donate a portion of their Anheuser-Busch product sales to a local non-profit dedicated to supporting transgender individuals. These actions reflect a broader commitment to supporting the community and ensuring that the spirit of Pride endures.
The recent developments underscore the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ communities and their allies. As corporate support becomes more precarious, the importance of local and community-driven initiatives becomes ever more apparent. The resilience and solidarity demonstrated by Pride St. Louis and its supporters serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of Pride and the fight for equality.
As the St. Louis community rallies together, the hope is that the festival will continue to thrive and inspire future generations, fostering an environment of acceptance and celebration.
Pride festivals and events are an integral part of the LGBTQ+ community, providing both a space for celebration and an opportunity to reflect on the progress made toward equality and inclusion. "Pride Under the Stars 2025" is one such event that promises to be a magical evening filled with joy, unity, and community spirit, taking place at the picturesque Spiotta Park in South Orange, NJ. Every night after class, I logged onto a gay website, seeking my first sexual encounter. Eventually, I connected with someone who didn’t mind that I was a wheelchair user. After some conversations about what [...]
