Kansas Governor Laura Kelly Blocks Restriction on Trans Youth Healthcare for the Third Time
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has once again vetoed a contentious bill that aimed to restrict access to gender-affirming healthcare for transgender minors. The legislation, known as Senate Bill 63 or the Help Not Harm Act, proposed to prohibit healthcare professionals from providing gender-affirming treatments, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy, to individuals under the age of 18. The bill successfully passed in the Republican-majority Kansas House of Representatives with an 83-35 vote and in the Senate with a 32-8 vote.
Speaking to ABC News, Governor Kelly emphasized her priorities, stating, "Right now, the legislature should be focused on ways to help Kansans cope with rising prices. That is the most important issue for Kansans, that is where my focus is." She underscored that interfering with parental rights is not in line with Kansas values, saying, "It is not the job of politicians to stand between a parent and a child who needs medical care of any kind."
Governor Kelly's veto faces potential overturning as Republican leaders in Kansas have expressed their determination to override it. Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson criticized the governor's decision, labeling her as aligned with "extreme left-wing ideology" and accusing her of prioritizing this over the welfare of Kansas children. Echoing similar sentiments, Chris Croft, the leader of the Kansas House of Representatives, described the veto as "reckless and senseless." Meanwhile, Republican U.S. Senator Roger Marshall accused Governor Kelly of putting her "radical liberal ideology above the safety of Kansas kids," arguing that restricting access to gender-affirming care is necessary to prevent "child mutilation."
