Rutger published: Juno Dawson Joins the Writing Team for Doctor Who's Upcoming Season

Trans Author Juno Dawson Joins Doctor Who's Writing Team

Renowned trans author Juno Dawson, celebrated for her influential works such as "This Book Is Gay" and "Mind Your Head", is set to bring her unique storytelling talents to the iconic science fiction series Doctor Who. Dawson will join a prestigious team of writers for the upcoming season of the beloved show, working alongside industry veterans and acclaimed writers like showrunner Russell T Davies, Pete McTighe, Inua Ellams, and Sharma Angel-Walfall.

"I started watching Doctor Who with my grandma when I was ten years old in the 1990s," Dawson recounted. "From writing fan-fiction for an audience of one, to scripting the best TV show of all time is truly a dream come true. I can’t wait for fans and newcomers to see the new season." Her passion and long-time admiration for the series make her a perfect fit for this groundbreaking season of Doctor Who.

Apart from her critically acclaimed books, Juno Dawson is also known for her work on the BBC podcast, Doctor Who: Redacted. This podcast featured the fascinating exploits of former Doctor Jodie Whittaker and her companions as they navigated a time-twisting conundrum where everyone who had ever met the Doctor mysteriously vanished. Dawson's talent for crafting compelling narratives that explore complex themes through a science fiction lens makes her an exciting addition to the Doctor Who team.

In addition to her work on Doctor Who, Dawson is currently adapting Eliza Clarke’s novel Penance for television with Altitude Television, showcasing her versatility and capacity to handle diverse storytelling formats.

The upcoming season marks a significant milestone for representation in the series, with Ncuti Gatwa becoming the first Black, queer actor to portray the Doctor. Gatwa's portrayal has been widely praised, and his return as the titular Time Lord is highly anticipated by fans worldwide.

The announcement of Dawson joining the writing team follows a recent Doctor Who Christmas special that featured Nicola Coughlan, of Derry Girls fame, playing a character named Joy. Her story, which revolves around a hotel chain exploiting time travel, adds to the rich tapestry of narratives that Doctor Who is known for. The episode, titled "Joy To The World", was well received, particularly for its innovative storyline and strong character development.

The much-anticipated new season, marketed as 'season two' due to production changes and Disney+ acquiring international broadcasting rights, is set to premiere in 2025. Russell T Davies, a fan-favorite showrunner acclaimed for his work on "It’s A Sin" and "Queer as Folk", returns to lead the production under the Bad Wolf label.

"Doctor Who takes its talent from a glittering galaxy of names, and these extraordinary writers span the skies," Davies commented. "We’ve got old hands, new stars, voices from theatre, radio, and literature, the whole works! It’s the most wild and exciting season of Doctor Who yet, and I can’t wait to unleash their brilliant work."

The previous 14th season, which introduced Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, was lauded for its increased LGBTQ+ representation. This included the introduction of Rose, the trans daughter of classic Doctor Who companion Donna, portrayed by Yasmin Finney. The inclusion of diverse characters and storylines continues to resonate with audiences, affirming the series' commitment to reflecting the diversity of its fan base and the world at large.

As Doctor Who continues to evolve, the addition of Juno Dawson and other talented writers promises to bring fresh perspectives and rich narratives that will captivate both long-time fans and new viewers. With the collaborative efforts of this dynamic team, the upcoming season is poised to be one of the most thrilling and inclusive yet, ensuring that Doctor Who remains a beloved staple of science fiction television.
