Grace Flahive Envisions a Queer Sanctuary in a Future Florida
Grace Flahive’s debut novel, Palm Meridian, takes readers on a journey to a vibrant and inclusive queer retirement community, set against the backdrop of a climate-altered Florida in the near future. This imaginative and poignant narrative resonates deeply, especially amidst the current socio-political climate where the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals face renewed challenges.
As Grace Flahive embarks on her North American tour, she reflects on the whirlwind of book signings and celebrations that have marked the release of her novel. “It feels surreal, like stepping into a dream,” she muses. Palm Meridian is an act of artistic defiance, a testament to resilience, even if Flahive didn’t initially set out with that intention.
The novel sprouted from a simple concept: a “lesbian retirement resort.” What began as a seed of an idea blossomed into a rich narrative tapestry. Flahive, who identifies as queer, admits, “This is my first time writing a queer story, and it felt more authentic and enjoyable once I embraced that.”
Set in a lush yet surreal Florida, partially submerged due to climate change, the story revolves around Hannah, a resident of the retirement community, who, after receiving a terminal diagnosis, decides to celebrate life with one final grand party. Flahive, familiar with Florida through multiple visits, found the symbolism of setting her story there particularly poignant, especially as real-world politics seem to echo her narrative.
“I completed the novel before the political landscape shifted further,” she reflects. “Its release now, in this atmosphere, feels like a statement. I’m proud that this joyful, unapologetically queer story unfolds in Florida, making it inadvertently rebellious.”
One of the novel's most notable aspects is its time-hopping narrative, which weaves between Hannah’s present and significant moments from her past. “Focusing the book on Hannah's last 24 hours led me to question what memories surface at life’s end. The happiest and saddest memories became my guide,” Flahive explains.
Rather than being clinical or overly sentimental, Palm Meridian vibrates with life. Characters brim with vitality, none more so than Esme, Hannah’s exuberant best friend. “Esme was a joy to write. She’s lively and fun, yet has depth. I wanted readers to truly see her,” Flahive shares.
Flahive addresses the scarcity of older queer characters in literature. Although initially unintentional, her focus on elderly characters became a defining and impactful feature of the novel. “There’s this notion that life dwindles after 60, but these characters are still vibrant and full. I wanted to depict that sense of timeless selfhood,” she states.
At its core, the novel envisions a resilient queer community and chosen family, a theme drawn from Flahive’s own life experiences. “Hannah’s community mirrors my own queer friendships. We’re diverse, sometimes clashing, yet always supportive. That’s how we’ll face whatever the future holds,” she asserts.
Despite its futuristic setting, the book deliberately avoids the trappings of traditional sci-fi. “When people hear 2067, they envision flying cars. But it’s as close as 1983 is to us now. This proximity makes the story feel immediate; this could indeed be our future,” Flahive suggests.
She envisions expanding the world of Palm Meridian further, hinting at potential sequels exploring the daily lives of its characters. “I’d love to return to the vibrant community. There’s so much more to uncover,” she hints.
Currently, Flahive is also working on a new project, still in its nascent stages. “It’s early days, but the themes of hope and bittersweet joy will definitely persist,” she reveals.
In a literary scene where queer narratives frequently revolve around tragedy, Palm Meridian stands out as a celebration of life. It’s a vibrant, joyous gathering at the world’s edge. “I hope readers leave with a sense of resilience,” Flahive concludes. “Because reaching 2067 will depend on communities like ours.”
