David Coote, a former elite referee in English football, has recently opened up about his personal and professional challenges, including his sexuality. Coote, who officiated Premier League matches for over six years, was dismissed from his role by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following an investigation into his conduct. In a candid interview, Coote has publicly come out as gay, sharing his journey with a wider audience.
At 42, Coote had an impressive career as a referee, having officiated 112 games in the Premier League. He also served on the FIFA international list of referees from 2020 to 2022 and played a significant role as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.
However, his career faced turbulence last year when a video surfaced online. The footage allegedly showed Coote making derogatory remarks about Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp. The incident was reportedly from the 2020/21 Premier League season.
Following this, PGMOL suspended Coote as they initiated an investigation. Shortly after, another video emerged showing Coote apparently using drugs during the Euro 2024 tournament. These events led to his dismissal in December, compounded by allegations from 2019 involving premeditated decisions in match officiating, which Coote denied.
In an exclusive interview, Coote spoke about the struggles he faced with his sexuality. "I’m not telling an authentic story if I don’t say that I’m gay, and that I’ve had real struggles dealing with hiding that," he shared. Coote’s journey of self-acceptance was marked by deep feelings of shame during his teenage years. He came out to his parents at 21, and later to his friends, but continued to keep his sexuality private in the professional sphere.
"The pressures of being a high-profile referee in the world’s most popular soccer league, watched by millions worldwide, made it difficult to be open about my sexuality," Coote explained. He added that the fear of discrimination and receiving hateful messages during his career added to his reluctance.
In a statement to the media, Coote expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging that they were below the standards expected of him. "I take full responsibility for my actions," he said. "I am truly sorry for any offense caused and for the negative spotlight it put on the game I love."
Coote emphasized that his focus now is on his mental health and well-being. He hopes to use his experiences to contribute positively to football and society at large. He expressed gratitude to his family, friends, former colleagues at PGMOL, and supporters who have reached out with encouragement.
"There’s a lot to be done in football and society regarding discrimination," Coote noted. "I hope to be a part of that change."
David Coote’s journey is a testament to the complex intersection of personal challenges and professional responsibilities. By sharing his story, he hopes to foster greater understanding and acceptance within the sports community. As football continues to evolve, stories like Coote’s highlight the importance of inclusivity and mental health awareness.

In her blog, she expressed concerns that invoking God was less about fait [...]
One key part about taking charge in life? Defining yourself instead being shaped by someone else. It's all about living true and breaking away from those social norms dictating who "deserves" rights based on identity or fitting in with mainstream ideas. Often, society creates these isolating "closets" that keep people who dare defy these norms hidden and unsafe. History shows how religion's been [...]
