Rutger published: Elite Ski Jumper Announces His True Self: A Journey of Love and Loss

An elite ski jumper and former world championships medalist has courageously come out as gay, sharing his story on New Year’s Day with a heartfelt message about love and loss.

Embracing Authenticity

Andrzej Stekala, a renowned ski jumper from Poland, took to Instagram to reveal his true self to the world. "I want you to meet my true self. I am gay. I have kept this fact a secret for years — from you, from the media, and sometimes even from myself," Stekala wrote. His message marks a significant personal milestone after years of keeping his identity hidden.

In his post, Stekala opened up about a profound personal story of love and heartache. He shared his journey of being in a long-term relationship with a partner who deeply impacted his life. "The person who changed my life — he was my pillar, my support, and my biggest fan," he said, referring to his late boyfriend Damian.

A Tribute to Love

Accompanying Stekala's message was a touching reel dedicated to Damian, who passed away the previous November. The reel included cherished photographs from their holidays together and tender moments of them as a couple, set to the song "Good News" by Shaboozey.

Stekala described the irreplaceable loss he feels: "I cannot find the words to describe the pain I have been feeling ever since that fatal day. The world we had been building together fell to pieces. Every day without him is a fight, but also a reminder of how unconditionally I loved and was loved."

A Journey in Ski Jumping

Stekala's journey in professional ski jumping is notable. He met Damian in 2016, shortly after debuting in the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup. In 2016, Stekala was part of the Polish team that won bronze in the team competition in Zakopane, Poland. His career highlights include a third-place finish at the 2020 FIS Ski Flying World Championships and winning a bronze medal at the World Ski Championships in 2021.

Despite his achievements, Stekala is currently competing in the FIS Ski Jumping Continental Cup, striving for a return to the elite "A team" of Polish ski jumpers. He expressed hope for the future, stating, "Today, on the 1st of January, I am starting a new chapter. I do not want to hide who I am anymore. I am myself — a human being who loved and still loves. I know that he [Damian] would want me to go on living at peace with myself."

Support and Hope

Stekala's announcement has been met with overwhelming support. On social media, hundreds of supportive comments poured in from fans, fellow athletes, and public figures, offering their condolences and encouragement. Norway’s Halvor Egner Granerud, a fellow ski jumper, wrote: "Stay strong Andrzej… heartbreaking to read about your loss. Hope your brave 2025 will be a good year for you, filled with the freedom of not hiding who you are. All the best wishes."

Stekala's decision to come out is part of a broader narrative of LGBTQ representation in sports. The presence of openly gay athletes, like Austria's Daniela Iraschko-Stolz and freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy, continues to inspire and foster an environment of inclusion and acceptance.

Stekala plans to return to competitive action at the upcoming Continental Cup in Klingenthal, Germany. His resolve to compete openly as his true self signifies a new beginning.

Stekala concluded his message with a heartfelt note of gratitude to those who have supported him: "I wish to thank those of you who were by my side over the years, especially my family and closest friends. It is in you where I find my strength to open up. I will carry his name in my heart till the end of my days. I wish you all love and courage in the coming year."
