However, Dolly Parton was noticeably absent from the event. Fact-checking site Snopes revealed on social media platform X/Twitter that Parton has declined the prestigious award three times. The offers came twice from Trump and once from Biden, illustrating the bipartisan admiration for her achievements and humanitarian efforts.
Why Decline the Medal?
In a candid interview with NBC's Today show, Parton provided some insight into her decision to decline the award. She cited logistical issues with accepting it initially. "I got offered the freedom award from the Trump administration," she explained. "I couldn’t accept it because my husband was ill. Then they asked me again about it, and I wouldn’t travel because of COVID-19."
While these practical reasons played a role, Parton also expressed a deeper concern about the perception of accepting the medal. "Now I feel if I take it, I’ll be doing politics, so I’m not sure," she confessed. "I don’t work for those awards. It’d be nice, but I’m not sure that I even deserve it. That’s a nice compliment for people to think that I might deserve it."
