In a world where challenges abound, I find solace and strength on the playing field, refusing to be silenced by fear or hostility. The past week has been a whirlwind, marked by a visit to Las Vegas for the Creating Change Conference, where discussions of inclusion and resilience were at the forefront. It was amidst this backdrop that I faced the harsh political climate, which seems intent on targeting transgender individuals like myself.
Last Monday, as the new administration delivered its inaugural address, I sat with a heavy heart. The speech was laced with cynicism and animosity, directing its ire towards many marginalized groups, including the trans community. Despite the overwhelming sense of dread, it is the rigorous, sweat-inducing practices on the football field that keep me grounded. Three times a week, for two hours, I immerse myself in drills, strategies, and the camaraderie of my team, temporarily escaping the oppressive atmosphere beyond the lines.
Aside from my passion for sports, I dedicate my time to supporting others as an operator for Trans Lifeline. Over the years, I've been a lifeline to those engulfed in despair, and the current environment only exacerbates these feelings. Yet, I am buoyed by the unwavering support of my team, the Connecticut Ambush, a second-year club in the Women’s Football Alliance. Our owner, Colleen Vacirca, and my teammates stand by me, both on and off the field, offering a sense of community and belonging that is invaluable.
In 2025, sports continue to be a sanctuary for many transgender Americans, providing a space for self-care and peace, much like my father envisioned when he first introduced me to the game. However, I am acutely aware of the struggles faced by my friends whose children endure bullying simply for being themselves. Similarly, trans military personnel confront the harsh reality of potential exclusion from the very nation they serve with pride.
The aggressive rhetoric from politicians like Representative Greg Steube, who spearhead efforts to ban trans athletes, only adds fuel to the fire of division. It is disheartening to witness the extent of prejudice, particularly from those who purport to protect women’s sports while simultaneously undermining them.
In the face of this, I draw inspiration from fellow athletes like Sadie Schreiner, a standout sprinter at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Despite facing transphobia, Schreiner remains steadfast, choosing to focus on her love for track over the vitriol of strangers. Her resilience is a beacon of hope for trans youth and adults alike, encouraging us to live boldly and authentically.
The Creating Change Conference was a much-needed reminder of the power of unity and the importance of raising our voices. During a session on diversity in sports, my heart swelled with pride as Chris Mosier, a trailblazing trans athlete, acknowledged my contributions. His words, urging me to continue speaking out, resonated deeply.
This affirmation has fueled my determination to tell more stories and celebrate the achievements of LGBTQ athletes who shine on the field and beyond. Despite the ongoing challenges, I refuse to be cowed by those who belittle trans individuals in the guise of protecting women’s sports.
To the cisgender women who align with these views: you are not only demeaning me but also disrespecting the countless talented cis women in sports. From elite athletes to my dedicated teammates, we share a passion for the game that transcends gender.
Over the course of my transition, I have played for four different teams across two sports, and the acceptance I’ve received from players and coaches alike has been unanimous. This solidarity reinforces my resolve to continue fighting for my community off the field while striving for victory on it.
For me, being a transgender American in 2025 means standing firm in the face of adversity, playing the sports I love, and advocating for a world where everyone can participate without fear. As I lace up my cleats and take to the field, I do so with the knowledge that I am part of a vibrant and resilient community that refuses to be silenced.
