The organizers of the WorldPride Music Festival unveiled their lineup on Tuesday for the upcoming celebration in Washington D.C., which marks the 50th anniversary of Washington’s Pride weekend. However, the announcement has not been without controversy, as some performers have drawn criticism from parts of the LGBTQ+ community.
Among the performers announced is Grimes, the Canadian singer-songwriter also known as Claire Boucher. Her inclusion in the festival has sparked significant backlash on social media, primarily due to her personal and public connections with high-profile figures and controversial stances.
The crux of the issue appears to revolve around Grimes's on-and-off relationship with Elon Musk, with whom she shares three children: X Æ A-Xii, Exa Dark Sideræl, and Techno Mechanicus. Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur known for his companies Tesla and SpaceX, has been a polarizing figure, especially within the LGBTQ+ community.
Criticism also arises from perceived associations with the Trump-Vance administration. Earlier this year, Grimes was reportedly seen in Washington D.C. at a known MAGA hangout, which has fueled further backlash given the administration's policies that have been described as harmful to LGBTQ+ rights.
A number of comments on the festival’s social media announcement have echoed the sentiment of disapproval. Comments such as “drop Grimes” and “But why Grimes?” reflect the dismay among some in the community regarding her participation.
Hope Giselle, a well-known transgender activist based in D.C., publicly criticized the decision to feature Grimes in an Instagram Live session. Giselle expressed disappointment in the organizers for not ensuring more inclusive choices in their lineup.
“Grimes literally has children with Elon fucking Musk-rat, the person that is making us all feel this fucking small, or at least attempting to make us feel this fucking small,” said Giselle. “Y’all are gonna platform Grimes right underneath the headliners? That does not make fucking sense.”
This sentiment is echoed by many in the community who feel that Grimes's ties to controversial figures conflict with the values the festival aims to promote.
Elon Musk has been a vocal critic of certain aspects of transgender activism, which has only added fuel to the fire. Musk’s recent appointment as a “special government employee” has further increased his influence, granting him direct access to the president and significant sway over policy-making. Under the current administration, policies have been enacted that restrict the rights of transgender individuals, such as banning them from military service and limiting access to gender-affirming care for youth.
These actions have been widely criticized by LGBTQ+ advocates. Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign, emphasized the strength of the movement, saying, “Our movement has always been powered by people, and today, that power is rising. We see it in trans youth refusing to be erased, in parents and educators standing up for inclusive schools, in faith leaders rejecting hate and in communities coming together to say: we will not go backward.”
Musicians and attendees have taken to social media to voice their concerns. A member of the band Oblivion commented on the festival’s announcement post with “MAKE AMERICA GAY AGAIN,” a play on a well-known political slogan.
Another user, zjhunt, expressed disappointment in Grimes’s inclusion, stating, “Grimes? That’s disappointing. Hate and complicity in this administration’s actions have no place on a stage celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. Do better @worldpridemusicfestival.”
As of now, requests for comment have been sent to Capital Pride, the official host of the Pride events in Washington, as well as to Grimes’s publicist, but neither has responded.
The WorldPride Music Festival is scheduled to take place on June 6-7 at the RFK Festival Grounds. As discussions and debates continue, the event promises to be a focal point for both celebration and activism. For more information, interested individuals can visit the festival’s official site.
