Rutger published: Beloved Queer Film "Pride" Set for Musical Transformation

The acclaimed 2014 queer film "Pride" is set to receive a musical adaptation, as announced by the National Theatre. This exciting news brings fresh interest to the beloved story, which originally captivated audiences with its heartwarming tale of unlikely allies.

A Story of Solidarity

The original film "Pride" is grounded in true events, portraying the inspiring narrative of Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, a group of queer activists who stood in solidarity with striking coal miners in South Wales during the 1980s. The film featured an impressive cast, including George MacKay, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, and Andrew Scott, and was written by Stephen Beresford, who was Scott's partner at the time.

"Pride" was celebrated for its portrayal of two distinct communities coming together at a time of great need, finding common ground, and supporting each other in powerful ways. Although often categorized as a "queer film," actor Andrew Scott emphasized in a 2014 interview that the film's core message was about humanity and the universal spirit of community and solidarity.

The Musical Adaptation

The transition to the stage will see the film's director, Matthew Warchus, reuniting with writer Stephen Beresford to bring this story to life in a new format. Music for the stage production will be crafted by Christopher Nightingale, Josh Cohen, and DJ Walde, promising to add a vibrant and emotional layer to the narrative.

The National Theatre has announced that the musical will be part of their upcoming program, with initial performances planned for the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff, before moving to the Dorfman Theatre. Although specific dates have not been released, anticipation is building for what promises to be a spectacular production.

A Beacon of Creativity

Indhu Rubasingham, the director and co-chief executive of the National Theatre, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming projects in the theatre's lineup. "I am so excited about everything to come, and the wealth of projects and artists announced today," she stated. Rubasingham highlighted the National Theatre's role as a "beacon of creativity, humanity, and possibilities," acknowledging the importance of telling stories that resonate with diverse audiences.

For many, the film "Pride" achieved this by dramatizing a historical moment when different communities united in a profound way. Mike Jackson, one of the central figures in the true story and portrayed by Joseph Gilgun in the film, expressed his joy that the story was adapted for both film and stage, ensuring it is not lost to history.

Jonathan Blake, another significant character in the story, was portrayed by Dominic West. Blake was one of the first individuals in the UK diagnosed with HIV and remains one of the longest-surviving people with the condition. His story, alongside others, added depth and authenticity to the film's portrayal of 1980s Britain.

A Celebration of Human Connections

The upcoming musical adaptation of "Pride" is set to celebrate the same themes of resilience, community, and the power of standing together in the face of adversity. As the story makes its transition from screen to stage, audiences can look forward to a new interpretation that maintains the spirit and message of the original film.

Whether you're a fan of the original movie or new to the story, this upcoming musical promises to offer a unique and moving experience, capturing the essence of a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history.
