Rutger published: Beloved Lesbian Bar Closes as LA Wildfires Cause Unprecedented Damage

The Ruby Fruit, a cherished lesbian bar in Los Angeles, has announced its closure due to the catastrophic wildfires currently ravaging the city. This unfortunate development leaves the city with just one remaining lesbian bar.

According to reports, the wildfires have claimed the lives of at least 24 people, and over 92,000 residents of Los Angeles County are under evacuation orders. The Eaton and Palisades fires are reported to be some of the most destructive in California's history.

The Impact on The Ruby Fruit and Its Community

Emily and Mara, the owners of The Ruby Fruit, shared that the financial toll of the disaster has made it impossible for them to keep the bar open. The Ruby Fruit had only been in operation since February 2023. Despite the closure, they expressed hope that this is not a permanent goodbye. "Not goodbye... hopefully, this is just 'see ya later'," they posted on Instagram.

Their heartfelt message continued, "The devastation felt within our small community, as well as the unfathomable destruction that continues day after day, is truly beyond comprehension. Sadly, along with all the feelings of grief and shock we have experienced over the past few days, also came this undeniable reality: running our small business is no longer sustainable."

Emily and Mara thanked their patrons, saying, "There isn’t much more to say beyond we love you, LA. We love you, queer family. We are grateful for the support you’ve shown us over the past two years."

In an effort to support the employees affected by the closure, a fundraiser has been established, successfully raising over $6,500.

Community Response and Support

Honey's, the sole remaining lesbian bar in East Hollywood, expressed solidarity with those affected by the wildfires. They posted on Instagram that they were closed over the weekend "out of respect for those impacted by the wildfires in Los Angeles."

The sense of community among the LGBTQ+ establishments in LA is strong, with many coming together to support each other during these challenging times.

The Increasing Threat of Wildfires

The wildfires in California have drawn attention nationwide, with officials calling it one of the most severe natural disasters in US history. Governor Gavin Newsom stated, "I think it will be in terms of the costs associated with it, in terms of the scale and scope." He remains optimistic about the resilience of the community, saying, "I have absolute faith in our community. I have faith in our leaders. I have the faith of our capacity to work together."

As the fires continue to burn, the impact on local businesses and communities is seen as both immediate and long-term. The closure of The Ruby Fruit is a poignant reminder of the personal and economic toll these natural disasters can inflict.

The Ruby Fruit's closure is a significant loss for the LGBTQ+ community in Los Angeles, highlighting the importance of these safe spaces. The bar was not only a place for socializing but also a community hub where individuals could find acceptance and support.

Looking to the Future

While the future remains uncertain, there is hope that The Ruby Fruit can eventually reopen. Community support and fundraising efforts continue to play a crucial role in helping businesses and individuals affected by the fires.

We encourage everyone to share their thoughts and experiences in the comments, remembering to keep the conversation respectful. In these difficult times, maintaining a sense of community and support is more important than ever.

For those looking to help, consider donating to local relief efforts or supporting fundraisers aimed at assisting those affected by the wildfires.

The wildfires in California serve as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by climate change and the need for proactive measures to protect our communities and the environment.
