Rutger published: Activist Group to Protest Placement of Trans Woman in Male Prison

In a stand against perceived injustices, an activist group is organizing a peaceful protest rally, termed a "noise demo," outside a courthouse. This demonstration is aimed at drawing attention to the alleged mistreatment of Zoe Watts, a transgender prisoner.

The protest is scheduled to take place at Lincoln Crown Court on Monday, 13 January, with the primary demand being the relocation of Zoe Watts from a male to a female prison facility. Watts, a former employee of the Lincolnshire police, was apprehended in December for allegedly possessing a firearm without appropriate certification and for manufacturing a firearm.

According to the activist group known as Justice4ZoeWatts, Zoe, who is legally recognized as female, has been confined in the men’s wing of HMP Peterborough. There, she reportedly endures near-constant confinement in her cell due to safety concerns raised by prison staff.

A post from Justice4ZoeWatts highlights that "Zoe has been kept in her cell for 23½ hours a day because the staff claim she isn't safe around male prisoners. Nevertheless, they refuse to transfer her to a more suitable facility." Further discussions have reportedly centered on moving Zoe either to a male mental-health unit or to a ward housing male sex offenders.

Watts's legal documentation, including a gender-recognition certificate and a female birth certificate, affirms her status as female in the UK. Notably, there are no records from Lincolnshire police indicating that Watts is listed on the sex offenders register.

Justice4ZoeWatts has strategically timed their protest to coincide with Zoe Watts's anticipated court appearance. The group is determined to show that "Zoe is not alone on the outside," aiming to pressure HMP Peterborough into acknowledging the scrutiny they are under.

"Even if acts of transphobic violence occur behind closed doors, we are committed to standing up against them," the statement from the activist group reads. "Our presence is a reminder that the voices outside are vigilant and will persist in advocating for justice."

The current situation recalls previous cases such as that of Sarah Jane Baker, who faced similar treatment after being placed in a men’s facility following a public order charge. Baker, who was ultimately found not guilty, was during her detainment reportedly denied hormone treatment and given testosterone, an act activists argue constituted "medical detransition."

As this case gains attention, it raises broader questions about the treatment of transgender individuals within the correctional system, particularly regarding the alignment of their gender identity with their assigned prisons. The implications of such placements are far-reaching, affecting not only the individuals involved but also the policies governing gender and incarceration.

Efforts to contact the management at HMP Peterborough for their comments and perspective on the situation have been made, though a response is yet to be received.

The protest signifies a crucial moment for advocates of transgender rights, highlighting the necessity for systemic change and the need for policies that respect and protect the identities and rights of transgender individuals within the justice system.
