Rutger published: Zoe Saldaña Clarifies Stance Amidst Karla Sofía Gascón Controversy

Zoe Saldaña has recently addressed comments made by her Emilia Pérez co-star, Karla Sofía Gascón. Gascón, who made history as the first publicly transgender woman to be nominated for an acting Oscar, has been embroiled in controversy due to resurfaced social media posts.

The posts in question, which have since been deleted, contained inflammatory remarks with anti-Islamic sentiments and criticized the response to George Floyd’s death, as well as diversity initiatives at the Oscars. These revelations have sparked significant backlash and have impacted Gascón's Oscar campaign negatively.

Saldaña’s Response

During an interview with Variety, Zoe Saldaña was asked about Gascón’s claim that Saldaña supports her "200 per cent". Saldaña responded with a thoughtful pause, emphasizing, "I do not support any negative rhetoric of racism and bigotry towards any group of people. That is what I want to stand for."

Saldaña, herself nominated for an Oscar for her role in Emilia Pérez, expressed her emotions regarding the controversy, stating she felt "sad" and "disappointed". She shared, "I’m sad. Time and time again, that’s the word because that is the sentiment that has been living in my chest since everything happened."

She continued, "I’m also disappointed. I can’t speak for other people’s actions. All I can attest to is my experience, and never in a million years did I ever believe that we would be here."

Impact on the Oscar Campaign

The resurfacing of Gascón’s old posts has severely disrupted the Oscar campaign for Emilia Pérez, which has garnered a record-breaking 13 nominations, including Best Picture. Gascón has reportedly been removed from promotional materials associated with the film’s Oscars campaign. Additionally, Netflix, the film’s streamer, has distanced itself from Gascón by opting not to cover her travel or styling expenses for pre-Oscars events.

Director Jacques Audiard of Emilia Pérez, in a conversation with Deadline, stated that he has not communicated with Gascón and does not intend to do so. "I haven’t spoken to her, and I don’t want to," he said. "She is in a self-destructive approach that I can’t interfere in, and I really don’t understand why she’s continuing."

Audiard expressed his concerns regarding Gascón’s actions, questioning, "Why is she harming herself? Why? I don’t understand it, and what I don’t understand about this too is why she’s harming people who were very close to her." He added that he believes Gascón needs space to reflect and take responsibility for her actions.

Community Reactions and Moving Forward

The controversy has sparked discussions within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond, emphasizing the importance of accountability and the impact of past actions on present circumstances. Saldaña’s stance highlights a commitment to inclusivity and standing against any form of discrimination.

As the situation unfolds, the conversation around public figures, past mistakes, and their consequences continues to be pertinent. The Emilia Pérez team, along with audiences, awaits the Oscars on March 2nd, where the film's achievements will be celebrated amidst the ongoing discussions.

Viewers and fans are encouraged to share their thoughts on this matter, fostering a respectful dialogue and reflection on how such situations are handled and perceived.
