Rutger published: Zoë Kravitz Critiques '90s TV Shows for Homophobia

Zoë Kravitz, an acclaimed actress and passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, has openly criticized the undercurrents of homophobia in popular '90s television series, notably targeting Friends. Her observations, made during an interview with People magazine about her recent film, Caught Stealing, which is set in 1998, shed light on how some beloved shows might not stand the test of time when it comes to inclusivity and sensitivity.

Reflecting on 'Friends' and Its Impact

During the interview, Kravitz expressed her discomfort with certain aspects of Friends, a popular sitcom known for its humor and portrayal of friendship. “If you watch Friends now, you’re like, ‘Whoa, that’s...’”, she remarked, highlighting how jokes that once seemed harmless now appear outdated and insensitive, especially regarding LGBTQ+ topics.

Her colleague, Austin Butler, who stars alongside her in Caught Stealing and is a notable model for Yves St Laurent, was taken aback by her comments. “Wow, even in Friends?” he asked, to which Kravitz replied, “Oh, so much in Friends. Like, things that aren’t punchlines are punchlines. It’s wild. We can keep that there.”

Butler agreed with Kravitz’s assessment, adding, “Yeah, keep that in the ‘90s.” This exchange underscores a growing awareness and reconsideration of past media through a modern lens of social justice and equality.

Criticism and Response from Creators

While Friends remains a cherished part of many viewers' lives, its portrayal of certain characters and storylines has faced scrutiny over the years. The show's creators and cast have responded to these criticisms, acknowledging that some elements have not aged well.

For instance, Marta Kauffman, one of the creators of Friends, admitted in 2019 that the depiction of Chandler Bing’s parent, Helena, was problematic. Portrayed by Kathleen Turner, Helena was a trans woman, yet the script often referred to her as "Chandler’s dad," highlighting a lack of understanding and sensitivity towards transgender issues at the time. “We didn’t have the knowledge about transgender people back then, so I’m not sure if we used the appropriate terms,” Kauffman explained.

Additionally, Kathleen Turner, who played Helena, has expressed that she would decline such a role if offered today, stating, "Of course I wouldn’t do it now because there would be real people able to do it." This reflects a shift in the industry towards more authentic representation.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

Lisa Kudrow, who portrayed Phoebe Buffay on the show, provided a different perspective, defending the show’s efforts to tackle gender and sexuality issues. In a 2019 interview with The Sunday Times, Kudrow noted, “This show thought it was very progressive. There was a guy whose wife discovered she was gay and pregnant, and they raised the child together. We had surrogacy too. It was, at the time, progressive.”

However, Kudrow also acknowledged that if Friends were to be recreated today, it would likely be "completely different," reflecting contemporary values and understandings.

As society continues to evolve, so too does the portrayal of diverse communities in media. Discussions like these, prompted by figures such as Zoë Kravitz, are essential in pushing for change and fostering a more inclusive entertainment landscape.

We invite our community to share their thoughts and experiences related to the portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters in '90s TV shows. Your insights are valuable as we continue these important conversations.
