In 2022, a 15-year-old advocate named Harleigh Walker was recognized for her courageous efforts in supporting trans youth rights in Alabama. Her journey of activism began with the hope of bringing about positive change, but recent developments have led to a turning point in her life.
Harleigh Walker’s story is one of resilience and determination. Over the past three years, she has faced increasing challenges and threats to her safety, prompting her to make the difficult decision to leave her home state.
A few years ago, Harleigh found herself at the forefront of a battle against the Alabama legislation that sought to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth. This legislation marked Alabama as the first state in the United States to criminalize such care, creating a hostile environment for trans youth and their families.
Harleigh’s activism gained national attention when she appeared for a live interview with a major news outlet, followed by testimonies in front of both the Alabama legislature and the U.S. Senate. Her voice became a beacon of hope for many who felt marginalized and voiceless.
However, the landscape has shifted considerably since then. Harleigh expressed her deep concerns about the safety of transgender individuals in the current political climate, stating, “There’s really no safety in the country for transgender people now. I feel unsafe almost everywhere. It’s really scary.”
The political narrative has further intensified with the 2024 presidential campaign, where rhetoric against transgender individuals has been a focal point. Harleigh’s father, Jeff Walker, shared his fears, saying, “After the inauguration, with every car that drove down the street, I had this crazy fear that it was someone coming to try and take Harleigh away from us as parents.”
Since Alabama’s initial legislation, 24 additional states have enacted similar bans on gender-affirming care for transgender youth. The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold such a ban in Tennessee has cemented a legal framework that denies essential care to tens of thousands of trans youth across the nation.
The political environment has emboldened individuals to express hostility, further exacerbating the challenges faced by transgender communities. Harleigh remarked, “There’s been a shift, as certain leaders have given license to people to spew their hate.”
As Harleigh prepares to leave Alabama, she reflects on her journey. “I always said that no matter how unsafe I felt in my home state, I felt a safeguard in the federal government. Now, with the current administration, that feeling has changed.”
Harleigh had hopes of attending Auburn University, a dream shared by her father. However, given the current climate, the Walkers have decided it’s not safe for her to remain in Alabama. “It’s not safe for her in this state. Our state leaders don’t want her here, and they’ve made that abundantly clear,” Jeff Walker explained.
Instead, Harleigh will be attending college out of state, with plans to travel to Maryland for her orientation. “I’m going to go live my life wherever I end up happy — and continue being who I am,” she said. Harleigh and her father look forward to their new adventure, capturing every moment with their tradition of taking a selfie before embarking on a new journey.
Harleigh’s story is a testament to the resilience and determination required to advocate for change in the face of adversity. While her path may lead her away from Alabama, her commitment to her identity and to the fight for trans rights remains unwavering.
