Rutger published: Young Soccer Star Faces Backlash for Photo with Drag Queen

The annual Solidarity Dinner in Barcelona was a true highlight this year, serving as a vibrant gathering that united sports stars and their fans. Among those in attendance were Joan Capdevila, a FIFA World Cup champion, and Hector Fort, a young and promising right-back at just 18, already making waves at FC Barcelona.

Fort has taken social media by storm, amassing around 4 million followers as he begins his journey in professional soccer. With only 20 appearances in La Liga so far, he's already shown immense talent. His participation in this event brought a fresh burst and enthusiasm that was hard not just notice.

A photo stirs up a storm

Brigitta Lamoure, a well-known drag queen and activist, also graced us with her presence at this memorable evening. Celebrated in Catalonia, Lamoure's dedication and vibrant charisma in advocating LGBTQ+ rights are unmatched. During one lively moment with Fort, a playful photo emerged—Fort lifting Lamoure—captioned "Resurrection Sunday" by Lamoure on social media. This image quickly made its rounds online.

Unfortunately, what should've been a fun and positive interaction attracted some negativity, with homophobic remarks spreading on social platforms, somewhat clouding its original joyous spirit.

Tackling social media negativity

Lamoure expressed disappointment about these hurtful reactions, pointing out that many derogatory comments came from younger users, especially girls. She remarked, "I was blocking and deleting comments," as she reaffirmed her commitment toward a society that values diversity and inclusivity.

This incident sharply highlights ongoing struggles against toxic masculinity in sports. Despite Spain's welcoming stance toward LGBTQ+ communities, there's an unsettling rise in hate crimes related mostly about sexual orientation and gender identity.

The silence from FC Barcelona

Even though Lamoure received plenty support, she couldn't help but notice FC Barcelona and Hector Fort's silence on this matter. The club, which often displays symbols like rainbow flags during International Pride Day, faced scrutiny due its sponsorship connections with regions that have anti-LGBTQ laws, like Qatar.

This incident caught significant attention in Spanish media and continues gaining traction internationally. Everyone's waiting—will FC Barcelona or Fort address this in any formal capacity?

The larger sports community challenge

This situation between Fort and Lamoure highlights a bigger issue within sports: hesitating openly support LGBTQ+ athletes. While some, like former Spain striker Borja Iglesias, are vocal against homophobia, such opinions are rare among male pros.

Many people suggested that Barca players should support Lamoure, perhaps by posing with her or naming her an honorary "godmother" toward team. Lamoure even shared a video, singing by club's crest, hoping it conveys her wish her greater acceptance and inclusion.

Ongoing hurdles

For many athletes still in closet, meaningful encounters with LGBTQ+ individuals mostly occur only post coming out—a choice fraught with risk personally and professionally. The reluctance issue public support statements traps gay or bisexual players in difficult situations.

There's a chance that FC Barcelona or Fort might take a stand, although Lamoure remains doubtful. This whole scenario shines light on need proactive steps toward fostering inclusive sports environment.
