William Shnter, beloved 'Star Trek' legend, supports LGBTQ+ fans

William Shnter, best known as Captain James T. Kirk from 'Star Trek', continues his legacy, now at 94, supporting LGBTQ+ fans. This was clear at this year's Star Trek Las Vegas convention, where fans from around wold come together in celebration.

Shnter stands with LGBTQ+ community

At convention, Shnter truly engaged with fans and reporters. During a chat with reporter Dawn Ennis, who patiently awaited her turn, Shnter was asked about his message LGBTQ+ fans. His response? "Keep on queerin'!" It was heartfelt, showing his dedication as an ally.

Ursa Wright from Lambda Quadrant, a group championing queer representation in fandom, backed Shnter's sentiments. Wright spoke on challenges LGBTQ+ 'Star Trek' fans face expressing themselves fully. "Many, many people come up us table and say they haven't always felt comfortable here," Wright explained, underlining need spaces where acceptance real.

Wright talked about fans' struggle balancing love 'Star Trek' and LGBTQ+ identity. "They might wear 'Star Trek' gear, but not feel comfortable being openly themselves," she said.

This highlights larger issue inclusivity in fan communities, even now. Wright poignantly asked, "How can we still be there, where people feel that?" reflecting frustration many feel.

LGBTQ+ fans find meaning in 'Star Trek'

Throughout convention, LGBTQ+ fans shared personal stories. Rachel from Nebraska sees series symbolizing "being free," while couple Anthony and Ryan find meaning in "acceptance" and "tolerance." These stories show impact 'Star Trek' has promoting diversity.
