Why we still need Pride
“Pride has always been necessary,” Bryant stated firmly, pointing out historical struggles faced by LGBTQ+ folks. He recalled times when simple stereotypes—like assuming a short haircut indicated being a lesbian or associating a lisp with being gay—formed barriers. "We needed Pride when people lazily made these assumptions," he explained, drawing attention toward prejudices experienced by LGBTQ+ people.

He shared memories, saying, "We needed Pride when we were called names at school, sneered at, spat on, punched, kicked, and beaten up."

Even with so much progress, Bryant argued that Pride's importance hasn't diminished. "We need it now more than ever, when kids still face bullying because they're seen as camp or butch," he stressed. As a Minister concerned with Data Protection, Bryant pointed fingers toward global examples illustrating why Pride remains essential. He pointed out situations like in Hungary, where restrictions on LGBTQ+ rights have grown, with bans on marches among them. Other regions were mentioned where law enforcement specifically targets LGBTQ+ individuals and trans men and women continually face dehumanization.
Closer home in UK, Bryant spoke about rising homophobia, expressing his growing unease about personal safety now compared with years past. He blamed some issues on political rhetoric from figures like former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch, which has stirred anxiety within LGBTQ+ communities.
