Rutger published: White Lotus Scene Discussing Nonbinary Child Removed Following Trump's Reelection

After Donald Trump won reelection in 2024, HBO's hit series, *The White Lotus,* saw a significant scene about a nonbinary child cut from its latest season. This decision, made by series creator Mike White, was shared by actress Carrie Coon, who plays Laurie Duffy, a key character in this season set in a lavish Thai resort.

Creative choices and bold topics

In a recent interview, Coon opened up about how political currents shaped this season's narrative. Originally, there was a scene where Laurie Duffy's personal life was peeled back, revealing her daughter's nonbinary identity—possibly trans. Laurie was shown grappling with understanding and communicating her child's identity with her friends, making it a poignant moment.

"The original script gave more context about Laurie's home life," Coon shared. "You'd learn her daughter was nonbinary, maybe trans, using they/them pronouns, and you'd see Laurie working through explaining that, which was really compelling."

Politics shaping stories

The decision came after shooting wrapped, influenced by Trump's reelection and its implications. Given his administration's known stance on transgender issues, Mike White felt a standalone scene couldn't adequately tackle such a weighty topic.

"We wrote it all before Election Day," Coon explained. "But with Trump's administration actively stoking cultural wars against transgender folks, Mike thought a short scene just wasn't enough."

Since his return, Trump has aimed rollbacks on transgender rights, from federal identity recognition, access restrictions on gender-affirming healthcare, and military participation bans—all stirring up concern and protest among LGBTQ+ advocates.

Shifts in character and story arcs

Though *The White Lotus* wrapped shooting by August 2024, post-election edits reshaped its storyline. While this debated scene didn't make it, political echoes are woven throughout. For instance, a dinner chat between Laurie, Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan), and Kate (Leslie Bibb) subtly hints at Trump's influence—particularly shocking Laurie when she suspects Kate might have voted his ticket.

For Coon, including Laurie grappling with her child being nonbinary would've deepened these political layers. "It was brief, but it would have made Kate voting Trump even more provocative and offensive, given Laurie's child's place in this climate," she added.

Ongoing dialogues on gender

Interestingly, this season still delves deeply, touching on other gender identity stories, like discussions around 'kathoey'—often translated as "ladyboys." In Thai culture, kathoey are a distinct gender, showing how *The White Lotus* continues exploring diverse cultural gender narratives.

Choosing what stays or goes in a story highlights creators' tightrope walk between storytelling and real-world politics, showing how much external factors shape what viewers watch. Keep up with LGBTQ+ rights and media representation by seeking out more conversations and stories like this.
