The White House has made assurances to Republican lawmakers regarding Dr. Mehmet Oz's stance on transgender issues. Concerns arose after a Republican senator raised the question of whether Dr. Oz, a television personality appointed to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), might be too supportive of transgender individuals. In response, the White House emphasized that Dr. Oz is aligned with conservative values and committed to ending what they describe as "left-wing ideological nonsense" within the government.
The Senate Finance Committee recently advanced Dr. Oz’s nomination in a party-line vote. However, prior to the vote, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) sent a letter to Dr. Oz, questioning him about his past support for transgender issues, particularly a pro-transgender episode of The Dr. Oz Show that aired a decade ago.
Past Controversies and Current Challenges
One episode of The Dr. Oz Show featured Jazz Jennings, a transgender reality TV personality and author. During the episode, Dr. Oz praised Jennings' mother for her support, stating, “I love the support you’ve given your daughter. It’s wonderful. And you can see the beautiful young woman she’s becoming because of it.” This aired years before opposing transgender rights became a prominent issue within the Republican Party, particularly as numerous state laws targeting transgender rights emerged in 2021.
In his letter, Sen. Hawley questioned whether Dr. Oz's views had changed since his time as a television host. He inquired if Dr. Oz supports former President Trump's stance on banning gender transition procedures for minors, and posed additional questions about Dr. Oz's opinions on transgender participation in school sports, access to puberty blockers for minors, and efforts to defund hospitals treating transgender youth.

The White House addressed these concerns by assuring conservatives that Dr. Oz does not support transgender rights as previously perceived. A spokesperson stated in a message to a conservative outlet that every member of the Trump administration, including Dr. Oz, is dedicated to restoring "commonsense policies" and eliminating "left-wing ideological nonsense" from government operations. The statement expressed the administration’s eagerness for Dr. Oz’s confirmation to strengthen the team's efforts to "Make America Healthy Again" by reintroducing common sense into healthcare policies.
Dr. Oz's political journey, particularly his 2022 Senate campaign, marked a noticeable shift in his public statements regarding transgender issues. Shortly after announcing his campaign, he defended controversial author J.K. Rowling, who faced backlash for her views on transgender rights, labeling her as "very brave" while criticizing "cancel culture."

Dr. Oz's anti-transgender rhetoric has drawn significant attention. He has articulated concerns about the mental health challenges faced by transgender individuals, citing increasing suicide rates among transgender adults. Despite acknowledging these issues, Dr. Oz argued against transgender participation in sports, claiming it is "unfair" to integrate transgender athletes.
He further suggested that the inclusion of transgender individuals in women's sports undermines the progress made by feminists for equality in sports. Dr. Oz stated, “Feminists have very eloquently fought for the ability to have women’s sports be on equal footing as men’s sports, and this takes away that ability.”
