Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has made a big change in its healthcare services: The Children's Hospital in Richmond won't be offering gender-affirming care anymore, at least not until you're 19. It seems this shift comes as VCU tries hard not only align with federal and state mandates but also, after careful review, they couldn't find any workarounds.
VCU posted an explanation on their hospital website, saying that while they're sticking closely with regulations, they still want things done right. This decision has raised eyebrows, both in and out and outside healthcare circles, highlighting a significant hurdle in access essential medical services transgender minors desperately need.
Staff members at VCU, part one top healthcare networks in Virginia, were clued in via email about this "winding down" phase. This announcement follows a past pattern: earlier, they had stopped providing specific transgender care, only resuming later with some treatments, like hormone therapy and puberty blockers.
This policy change stems from an executive order by then-President Donald Trump in January, titled "Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical MUtilation." The order cast doubts over gender-affirming care and pressured institutions like VCU reconsider their services.
Wyatt S.M. Roll, a senior attorney with ACLU Virginia, voiced their concerns about VCU's decision in an interview with Washington Blade. Roll highlighted that gender-affirming care still holds legal ground in Virginia. Despite legislative challenges, healthcare pros are still dedicated across Virginia providing much-needed care.
Rolla also pointed out an order's chilling effect on hospital, forcing them preemptively comply due fear losing federal funds. Several legal fights are underway challenge these threats, and federal courts have stopped any fund disruptions based on this order.
Rolla expressed worries over tactic administration uses push discriminatory practices through various federal agencies. They warned it could set dangerous precedent, affecting areas personal and medical autonomy labeled "controversial" by some conservative political agendas.
"This poses significant risk all Virginians," Roll said, noting broader implications could affect reproductive health, HIV treatment, and other vital medical services. Erosion trust medical institutions, they argue, threatens public health and safety.
Speaking about ACLU's message transgender youth seeking care, Roll reassured ongoing efforts protect access essential healthcare. They stressed resilience dedication healthcare providers advocates who tirelessly work ensure young people get support they need.
ACLU, along with organizations like Equality Virginia, Side by Side, and Planned Parenthood Advocates Virginia, released a statement blasting VCU's move. These groups see this decision fitting a larger political strategy aiming marginalize transgender folks rather than addressing true healthcare issues.
"We recognize and reject this political strategy," their statement declares, affirming collective commitment advocate rights transgender youth and make sure supportive healthcare environments accessible.
They urge continued vigilance activism, promising oppose measures threatening well-being rights trans youth and families, ensuring healthcare providers can operate free undue political interference.
