Despite the cold and dreary weather on Sunday, the atmosphere inside the Salamander Hotel in downtown Washington was anything but. With a backdrop of the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument, leaders and advocates from the LGBTQ community gathered for the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund National Champagne Brunch, a celebration of achievements and a call to action for the future.
This year’s brunch marked the 25th annual event and was filled with lively discussions, networking, and powerful speeches from prominent LGBTQ elected officials and allies. The event drew attendees from across the country, all committed to advancing LGBTQ rights in a challenging political climate.
Highlights of the Event
The brunch was a colorful celebration, with attendees wearing vibrant attire that lit up the ballroom. Cherry blossom centerpieces added a touch of spring, echoing the nearby Tidal Basin's famous blooms. Despite the political challenges facing the LGBTQ community, the mood remained optimistic and determined.
The event featured numerous high-profile speakers, including Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who is considered a potential Democratic presidential candidate for 2028. Beshear received the Allyship Award and delivered the keynote address to over 150 attendees.

Governor Beshear spoke passionately about his commitment to fighting discrimination, particularly against transgender individuals. He criticized the use of discriminatory legislation as a political tool, emphasizing that it undermines the rights and dignity of vulnerable communities.
“Discrimination is never acceptable,” Beshear stated. “We must stand firm in our convictions and not let political gain dictate our values. We have the responsibility to be the true party of inclusion.”
Beshear highlighted his record of opposing anti-LGBTQ legislation in Kentucky, including his vetoes of bills that would have imposed harmful restrictions on LGBTQ youth in schools. He urged fellow Democrats to prioritize principle over politics, advocating for an inclusive approach that resonates with all Americans.
Addressing LGBTQ Rights and Faith
One of the unique aspects of Beshear’s advocacy is his integration of faith with LGBTQ rights. He consistently frames religious teachings as a call to love and inclusion, challenging interpretations that justify exclusion and discrimination.
“Faith should lift people up, not tear them down,” Beshear said. “We are called to love our neighbors without exception.” His message of inclusion resonates strongly, particularly in his home state of Kentucky, where he maintains high approval ratings despite its conservative leanings.
Voices from the Community
The event also featured remarks from other notable figures in the LGBTQ and political communities. Victory Fund President Evan Low emphasized the importance of electing LGBTQ leaders at all levels of government to ensure representation and drive policy change.
Tristan Schukraft, CEO of MISTR and owner of a renowned LGBTQ club, received the National Impact Award for his efforts in HIV prevention. He highlighted ongoing challenges and the critical need for continued action in the fight against HIV.
Other speakers included Greta Neubauer from the Wisconsin State Assembly and Amanda Gonzalez, a candidate for Colorado Secretary of State, both of whom stressed the importance of defending democracy and protecting fundamental rights.
The brunch concluded with a strong sense of resolve among attendees to continue advocating for equality and justice, both locally and nationally. The event served as a powerful reminder of the progress made and the work that still lies ahead in the pursuit of LGBTQ rights.
