19-year-old caught vandalizing San Francisco's beloved Pink Triangle

On what seemed like just another quiet Tuesday afternoon, a shocking incident jolted San Francisco's LGBTQ+ community. A 19-year-old named Lester Bamacajeronimo was arrested after being caught in a blatant act—defacing an iconic emblem: The Pink Triangle. Perched proudly atop Twin Peaks every year, this cherished symbol overlooks Castro District and stands as a testament during Pride Month.

What happened during this act?

Around 12:30 p.m., police were alerted about someone tampering with this precious installation using black spray paint. Officers quickly responded, and after a short chase, they managed Bamacajeronimo. He was found with tools linked directly with vandalism, and now faces charges.

The damage? Black zigzag lines crisscrossed over 26 out 175 tarps that form this sprawling Pink Triangle. Patrick Carney, who started The Triangle Project, shared his dismay, admitting, "We'll band-aid it with pink paint, but these tarps are going need replacing eventually."

Voices unite against vandalism

The backlash from community leaders and city officials has been swift. San Francisco's Mayor Daniel Lurie didn't mince words, slamming this as "an act filled with hate" that contradicts everything their city stands. "This year marks three decades since that first Pink Triangle appeared, a true testament our LGBTQ+ community's grit," Lurie said emphatically. "Such hateful acts won't go unchecked."

Scott Wiener, California State Senator, echoed those sentiments by labeling it a "hideous attack against LGBTQ+ folks." He added, "Our community's symbol—The Pink Triangle—stands defiant against hate and violence. We won't be run out, no matter how much they try desecrate it."

Patrick Carney pointed out this isn't their first brush with attacks on The Pink Triangle. Back in 2009, some vandal set fire several tarps during Pride Month. And at least two graffiti incidents have cropped up since then. More recently, anti-transgender stickers plagued areas near triangle; thankfully, devoted community members have tirelessly worked remove them. But despite all these hurdles, Carney insists this group remain unwavering:

The Pink Triangle first emerged back in 1995 as renegade art piece, aiming reclaim a symbol once weaponized by Nazis label gay individuals. Today, it's a staple San Francisco's Pride celebrations, assembled annually with help from over 800 volunteers.
