Rutger published: Vandalism and Hate Crime at Queer Bar Before Black Pride: A Community Stands Strong

Tucked in Washington, D.C.'s lively Adams Morgan neighborhood, a cherished queer bar, known as a sanctuary particularly welcoming people color, recently experienced a heart-wrenching act just as Black Pride weekend approached. This beloved spot, known as a safe haven, was broken in and marred with hateful graffiti, shaking its community profoundly.

A shocking blow at a beloved sanctuary

The unsettling event occurred at "Sinners and Saints," perched on 18th St NW. This bar has been a celebrated inclusive space primarily welcoming LGBTQ+ folks, especially Black individuals and people color. The intruders smashed through its glass door, and once inside, they sprayed a vile slur—"fa***t"—near its entrance. It's a chilling reminder that prejudice still stalks places dedicated purely acceptance and love.

A hateful act with malicious intent

The authorities are treating this as a second-degree burglary, with clear signs pointing toward hate as a motive against sexual minorities. One co-owner, Blair Nixon, shared her deep concern: "It was really scary," she said. "Realizing someone invaded our space and vandalized it—it was terrifying, and, honestly, devastating."

While liquor was stolen, what truly cut deep was that heinous slur. "It really felt targeted, considering what they wrote on our wall," Nixon observed.

The community's unwavering spirit

Neighbors upstairs discovered something was off when a power outage occurred. The intruders had meddled with building's electrical systems, affecting not just bar but nearby spots too.

On finding out, "Sinners and Saints" staff immediately alerted police. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded quickly, dispatching officers, detectives, and an LGBTQ liaison officer. Although security cameras weren't on site, nearby hostel footage was shared with authorities.

Despite this attack, "Sinners and Saints" proved its resilience, swinging its doors open just hours later, going ahead with their "Sapphic Sailor Moon" bash. Their unwavering commitment spoke volumes. In a message patrons and supporters, bar's owners made it known they wouldn't be cowed by hate.

Standing strong against intolerance

The bar's declaration was powerful: "Our space exists celebrate and protect Queer and Trans BIPOC communities. This attack only strengthens our resolve. We will NOT be silenced or intimidated, and we certainly won't back down."

Their message went on, "to those aiming harm our community: your hate fuels our defiance. And you, our community, we see, love, and fight on your behalf."

Still a symbol resistance, "Sinners and Saints" remains a testament strength and solidarity. The owners vowed, "We will rebuild. We'll STAY OPEN. And we'll keep our doors—and our hearts—wide open all who seek refuge."

A lighthouse hope amidst challenges

This unsettling event underscores ongoing struggles within LGBTQ+ community, particularly among people color, yet also highlights incredible resilience and unity that defines them. "Sinners and Saints" stands as a beacon hope and defiance, urging those touched by hate remain steadfast in their battle equality and safe spaces.

As investigations continue, "Sinners and Saints" remains an unwavering safe harbor, boldly opposing hate while spreading love and acceptance.
