Union J singer Jaymi Hensley recently opened up about the profoundly emotional decision to hold his fiancé Olly Marmon’s funeral on the date that was meant to be their wedding day. This heart-wrenching choice came after Marmon tragically passed away in August 2024.
The Difficult Choice
In a candid conversation on the What If People Find Out? podcast, Hensley shared the circumstances and considerations that led to this decision. "It was my choice," Hensley explained, as he recounted the practical mindset that often accompanies sudden grief. "We had the venue booked, the caterers arranged, and everyone had already taken time off work. It just made sense."
On September 24th, the day originally planned for their joyous union, Olly Marmon's funeral took place. Hensley elaborated on the importance of the date: "Everyone was available, so there wouldn’t be any friends or family saying, ‘I can’t make it.’"
An Emotional Journey
Marmon and Hensley’s story began when they met as teenagers, and their bond only grew stronger over the years. Hensley shared how integral it was for him to honor his promise to walk Olly down the aisle on that specific day. "I felt a duty to do it," he said, reflecting on the commitment he had made to his partner.
"I didn’t want to be alone on that day," Hensley continued. "I didn’t want to find myself on a random Tuesday, sitting on my mum’s sofa, grieving with my family, and thinking, ‘They should be getting married now.’" Instead, he opted for an event that matched the significance of a wedding in magnitude and emotion — a funeral.
A Day of Mixed Emotions
Describing the day as "the most beautiful and worst day of my life," Hensley recounted the overwhelming support from friends, family, and fans who attended the ceremony. "It was a tiny village church, and when I saw the number of people queuing outside and down the streets, I was just so blown away," he tearfully recalled.
The vast turnout was a testament to the impact Olly had on those around him. "It was so beautiful that so many people turned up for my boy," he added, expressing gratitude for the love and support that enveloped him during such a difficult time.
Finding Solace and Community
Amidst the heartbreak, the ceremony was a moment for Hensley to find solace and feel a sense of community. The shared memories and collective grieving became an unexpected source of strength.
As Hensley navigates this new chapter without his partner by his side, he remains committed to cherishing Olly’s memory and honoring their love. "It had to be something as big as a wedding," he said, "to take up that much time and space in my brain and occupy me on that day."
Grief is a deeply personal journey, and for Hensley, choosing to commemorate Olly on their wedding day was a poignant way to intertwine love and loss into a singular, unforgettable event.
