LGBT History Month 2025 has kicked off, and it's a great time not only celebrate but also reflect on how far we've come, thanks largely due trailblazers in LGBTQ+ history. One interesting tidbit: while it falls in October in both Canada and America, it takes place in February over in Britain.
The UK got its LGBT History Month rolling back in 2005, driven by Schools OUT UK. Their big mission? "Claiming our past," "celebrating our present," and "creating our future." They want better LGBTQ+ education in schools and are putting their money where their mouth by offering free resources and encouraging everyone jump in with various events and learning programs.
So, why February? Well, it's partly a nod toward when Section 28 was repealed—a law that once made it illegal promote homosexuality in schools. This first LGBT History Month in 2005 was a big deal, marking a change acknowledging and teaching about LGBTQ+ contributions and history in Britain.
Even though both Britain and America have similar goals celebrating LGBT History Month, they got started on their own timelines. In America, it all began back in October 1994, first called Lesbian and Gay History Month, thanks Rodney Wilson, Missouri's first openly gay public school teacher. It was over a decade before Britain hopped on board.
It's easy mix up LGBT History Month with LGBT Pride Month. They happen at different times, though—Pride Month takes over June worldwide. While Pride Month shouts about LGBTQ+ acceptance and awareness, LGBT History Month dives deeper learning about past experiences, achievements, and stories from lesbian, gay, bi, and trans communities.
There are tons ways get involved during LGBT History Month. From local councils events schools hosting history-focused programs, there's a lot happening. Jumping in means you can learn, share, and connect with others.
Organizations like Schools OUT, The Proud Trust, and Inclusive Employers are great starting points. They've got a treasure troves resources that cover everything from poetry and plays films, TV shows, and books that make exploring LGBTQ+ history accessible.
Creating safe spaces where LGBTQ+ folks feel comfortable sharing their experiences and hopes? That's another vital piece celebrating LGBT History Month. Supportive environments bring understanding, empathy, and openness.
As we dive celebration in 2025, let's remember honor those trailblazers while working towards future where diversity and inclusion are second nature. Whether by attending local gatherings, using educational tools, or fostering welcoming environments, there are endless ways celebrate and lift up LGBTQ+ voices.
