Rutger published: Under Trump's New Administration, Policies of Exclusion and Authoritarianism Rise

Since Donald Trump reclaimed the presidency, the United States and the world have witnessed a stark contrast to the policy approaches initiated during Joe Biden's term in office. Trump's return has been marked by an aggressive series of executive actions that reflect his campaign promise of authoritarian leadership.

During his campaign, Trump suggested he would assume a dictatorial stance from day one. The flurry of executive orders he has signed since taking office again indicates a commitment to this authoritarian promise, reshaping national and international policies to reflect his singular agenda.

Concentration of Power

In his farewell address, President Biden cautioned against the rise of oligarchic power in America, a warning that seems prescient as Trump surrounds himself with an elite circle of wealthy individuals. At Trump's second inaugural ceremony, the presence of billionaires and media moguls like Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk highlighted a dangerous concentration of wealth and influence.

The combined wealth of Trump's proposed cabinet far exceeds that of Biden's, signaling a shift towards governance by the ultra-wealthy. This trend towards oligarchy threatens democratic processes and the very fabric of equality and opportunity in the United States.

Reversing Progress

Trump's initial executive orders aim to dismantle many of Biden's initiatives, which were largely focused on recovery and equity. Trump's actions have included withdrawing from international agreements like the Paris Climate Accord, halting federal research funding, and reversing healthcare expansions.

Particularly contentious is Trump's decision to pardon all January 6 rioters, undermining the judicial process and emboldening anti-democratic actions. Moreover, his declaration of a national emergency at the southern border has sparked controversy, with military deployments raising legal and ethical questions.

A Direct Attack on LGBTQ+ Rights

Trump's administration has taken aim at the LGBTQ+ community through a series of regressive policies. An executive order restricting recognition of gender identity to "male" or "female" not only erases non-binary identities but also denies trans individuals access to necessary healthcare services.

This policy is compounded by orders banning trans individuals from military service and removing protections for LGBTQ+ content on federal websites. Such actions reflect a broader agenda of exclusion and discrimination under the guise of traditional values.

Undermining Social Justice

Further exacerbating social tensions, Trump has dismantled the Civil Rights division of the Justice Department and ended federal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs. By promoting a false narrative of meritocracy, his administration ignores systemic inequities that disadvantage marginalized groups.

These actions strip away protections that have been vital for achieving social justice and equality, promoting instead a homogenized and exclusionary view of American society.

A Call for Compassion and Resistance

Amidst these troubling developments, faith leaders and social justice advocates continue to call for compassion and resistance against policies of cruelty and division. The struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and equality for all marginalized communities must persist in the face of authoritarian governance.

Trump's presidency, marked by policies that prioritize power over people, challenges the democratic ideals of the nation. It is imperative for communities to unite in advocacy and action to safeguard rights and freedoms against an administration that seeks to undermine them.
